Default GL960 Chipset Processor Upgradability

Laptop in questions: Acer Aspire 4315. Gl960 chipset with a 1.86ghz Smell-er-on processor, 2gb RAM (self upgraded) and 80gb HD. X3100 integrated graphics.

What can I upgrade the processor to? Will a T5300 or a T5450 work?

Hard to say here. Officially the Intel site claims that the GL960 should only support Celerons, but there's quite a few reports of people using C2D on a GL960, so I'm not really sure of the best way to go around this one...

Barring chipset limitations, you're mechanically good through a T7800 since it's Socket P; a T5500 will definitely not work since that's Socket M.

What other processors will work? Do I need to be concerned about the FSB speed as well?

Default Re: GL960 Chipset Processor Upgradability

The processors that for sure will work are:

Celeron M 530 1733 1024 533
Celeron M 540 1866 1024 533
Celeron M 550 2000 1024 533
Celeron M 560 2133 1024 533

I like I said before, officially the GL960 only supports these Celerons on a 533MHz FSB. This post reports someone successfully using a T5450 on a 667MHz FSB on the GL960:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=210436

So my point is it is hard to say what processors are compatible because of the discrepancy between official and practical limitations; I'm not sure of ALL GL960 chipsets will actually support a 667MHz or even 800MHz FSB or just a few special ones that might be like downgraded GM965 chips.

Kthx. I think Im going to go with a T5450. That will definately be an upgrade over the Smell-er-on

Good luck on the upgrade; it'll be interesting to see if these C2D upgrades work consistently.

I got Gateway with GL960 chipset and T2310 and upgraded to T5450 successfully. I also upgraded RAM to 3GB even though the spec said that It can be maxed out at 2GB only.

Ah well I have an HP Compaq 6720s with a Celeron M 540 and wanted to upgrade to a T7100 I won on eBay for an amazing £41! Unfortunately I've found out that the chipset is the GL960 (I assumed that the laptop was using GM965). I don't know if the laptop would recognize the T7100 at all, it might run at 533 FSB instead of 800MHz (if that's possible) but probably won't work at all. I could always attempt it but I have to disassemble my laptop and if there are no guarantees then is there a point?

This confirms GL960 and 667MHz Core 2 Duos are compatible:

OK, here's the moment of the truth the T5250 has arrived. Hopefully the next time I reply it'll be with a T5250 in
