for reliability?
which company, based on your experience, do you feel is the most reliable for the money? (durability, hardware failures?) if you feel the need to comment, please post WHY and any other possible companies you feel should be on the list.

Out of the box, the HP ran beautifully. I was not too fond of the graphics on the DV1000.

hmm, how can IBM be "most reliable for the money"? when it is arguably at the top of the pile in quality and price? The phrase suggests an optimum between price and quality, not an extreme.

so judging by the current poll. Hp seems to be the best bang for the buck. in terms of reliability, peformance, durability, and overall quality? if not please correct me. id rather spend an extra 2-300 dollars for something a lot better.

i also have another question concerning the hp dv4000. are these cases made out of the same material as what fujitsu uses? (i believe its magnesium?).

that something better for 2-300 $ will have to be fujitsu. IBM is without a question top of the hill, but you will have to pay quite a bit more.

Very misleading topic!!! You should have had all the brands and then you can compare which one is the best. How can you compare something that you never have or even touch?

HP outsources *ALL*, read: *ALL* their laptop developments to Quanta Computer in Taiwan since about 5 years ago (when their laptop divison was in danger of folding due to unable to compete with Dell and others in terms of price). Quanta not only manufactuers HP's laptops (HP is the 2nd largest OEM Client of Quanta, behind you-know-who), but they also does the bulk of the DESIGN work for them as well!
According to Quanta they also designed 60% of Apple's iBook line, and virtually all of Dell's Latitude -- who also happen to be their biggest OEM customer. Some of their other customers include, but not limited to: Sony, Dell, IBM. Essentially, the HPs, Dells, IBMs, Sonys that ppl buy, most likely are all assembled under the same roof, just off different assembly lines, under the same exact ISO-manufacturing standard! Of course it's up to the individual manufactuers to do the QC, but in terms of construction -- it's simply a commodity item, there is virtually no difference between them.
That being said, you also need to look at warranties. As far as I know HP and Sony have some of the most horrendous services in the Industry. If you really abuse the heck out of your notebooks like I tend to do, it is FAR better to pay $300 more for a 3yr extended on-site service, than paying $300 more for "supposely" superior build, imho.
cheers,
yass

IBM is by far the best and they are durable. In terms of the poll, so many manufacturers are missing, such as Sony, Toshiba, and Panasonic. Personally i'd never even consider another manufacturer because they are the only notebook that gives the choice of the trackpoint or touchpad, and I prefer the trackpoint which to me is worth the little bit of extra money.

Everyone has an opinion, but Fujitsu and IBM consistently score at the top of the charts.
