ASUS G1S + 4 gb ram + windows xp = resource conflict (intel pm965) and startup problems.

Hi all!

I bought an Asus G1S, upgraded to 4 gb ram and felt in love with windows vista. Nevertheless I still have to use windows xp on a second partition, as parts of my audio equipment (e. g. Access Virus TI) are not vista-compatible.

Unfortunately I get a resource conflict with a "Mobile Intel PM965 PCI Express Root Port - 2A01" where nvidia's 8600m seems to be located. Ergo: I cannot install correct graphic drivers and have to use XP's "Standard VGA" - with all known disadvantages.

Therefore I entered the bios and disabled ("locked") all additional peripherals (eSata, Sound, USB, ...) to free up system resources but the conflict still persisted. A test installation of Windows Server 2003 showed the same symptoms.

After removing one 2 gb ram bar everything worked fine.

I searched the web for solutions on this problem and as far as I understand, this problem can only be solved by a bios update as windows xp is not able to change resource allocation of non-plug'n'play devices like pci express root ports.

BTW: Since I have upgraded to 4 gb ram, the g1s has also a startup problem: after shutting down vista i always have to a wait a while to be able to reboot the notebook - otherwise it hangs up.

To make it short: 4 gb ram causes a "Mobile Intel PM965 PCI Express Root Port - 2A01" resource conflicts in windows xp & server 2003 so that nvidia's 8600m does not work. Now I want to ask you all for some hints and solution ideas.

Does your "know" means, ASUS is aware of this problem?
And what is with the strange battery charging "feature"? Do they know about it?

Would it make sense to start a kind of "Asus G1S bugs summary" - thread?

so you are able to install windows xp over the G1S.
May I ask you a question?
Where did you find the drivers of the SATA controller for XP?

well I tell you my problem...

when I try to boot from XP diskette after the initial procedures it don't find any HDD. Please help me.

Hi Max,

to make it short:
You have to integrate intel's sata driver (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...ional&lang=eng) into your windows xp setup cd. Therefore you can use nlite - or what i find much more comfortable - "XP ISO BUILDER" (http://www.winfuture.de/xpisobuilder)

I mailed asus, friends mailed asus. I think people here also mailed asus. If asus knows the problem... i think they are ignoing it for their interest!!

I have just gone through all the statements concerning this annoying battery-charge-cpu-underclocking-"feature"... it sounds like a bad joke to me.

How can Asus sell this laptop as 2,2 ghz machine - if it is not achieved while charging the battery to 90%?

If the power supply is too weak - it has to be replaced by Asus.
If not, the bios has to be changed - also by Asus.

You do know that unless you're running XP64 that 4 gig of RAM cannot be used? (maximum of 3 is possible)... however I'm not sure whether having 4 gig would cause these problems.
