Default 4 GB Ram in Asus G1s

I have been researching notebooks for a few weeks now and have finally settled on an Asus G1s. I am planning to order the notebook thru GenTech, but would like to clear a few things up before I proceed. Is it worth paying $238 extra for the upgrade to 4gb ram? Will there be a noticable increase in performance? Will I need to install the 64 bit version of Vista in order to make use of this upgrade? Thank you for the help!

do not pay for that, its a rip off.

get your own 2 sticks of 2GB DDR for around $180-200.

read the RAM Deals thread for the best deals on the net.

I would recommend you get 3GB total. Replace one of the 1GB sticks that cames standard with the G1s with a 2GB stick that you buy aftermarket like Gophn said.

Then you dont have to worry about Vista too. 32bits supports 3GB.

I would just get 3GB of RAM. I am told you can't utilise 4GB in vista (32-bit). I as in the same position as you and i eventually went for 3GB and i also ordered from GenTech. my G1S came on friday and I am very happy with my purchase

Going for 4GB is just right for a gaming machine. As a contrast to my notebook, which has 2Gb, the gaming experience still left me wanting for more . And yea, you got to have a 64bit OS to address the 4GB of RAM.

if you're going to game, you'll want to run vista 32 bit, and if you're going to run vista 32 bit, it will only support about 3gb of ram.

What about Dual Channel? To my understand, dual channel requires 2 laptops sticks of the size and speed. Or do the benefits of upgrading to 3GB outweigh the benefits of 2GB running dual channel?

I've seen the posting by GenTechPC showing better framerates in FEAR when upgrading to 3GB, but I'm suddenly wondering what the impact of sacrificing dual channel is.
