Default Intel Atom Dual-Core Netbooks Coming?

Intel Atom Dual-Core Netbooks Coming?

The Sony VAIO P29 netbook showing up on ComputercityHW.it features an Intel Atom Z630 processor - so far there is not been a whisper about this processor from Intel. While it may be a typo, this could very well be a dual-core variant of the Atom. The numbering fits - for example, the Atom 230 is single-core, while the 330 is dual-core. The Z530 is a single-core Atom, and the Z630 could be that dual-core we are all looking for.

FINALLY!
Dual core ATOMS give a much needed boost, now if we can only get the ION platform in netbooks then we will really have something.

I was wondering when the lower end processors would go duel/quad core.

they are allready duell-core hyperthreading, both fight for the one core ..

i know it was just a typo, but it was quite funny while reading to realize that yes, indeed, those exist, too

I'll go with typo since the Z Atoms were meant for 7-9" MIDs and handhelds before manufacturers started putting them in UMPC-style netbooks.

I'd say if it wasn't a typo then maybe it was part of the Pineview family but the site lists GMA500.

I was under the impression that Intel didn't allow dual core atoms in netbooks, not to mention the power consumption being quite larger then single core variants.

That is true, but this is the 2nd generation of Atom, they could have by now gotten a low enough power dual core that is only a little less power efficient than a single core. An N330 in desktops uses 4w vs an N270 in netbooks at 2.5w or an N280 at 2w, its not too big a difference.

Unfortunately, it turns out that the Z630 was probably a typo.

It's funny how this rumor is spread all over the net.
