Apple Releases Firmware Update for 17" MBP

Apple released an update for its Early 2009 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro, the Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 (770kb). It is designed to fix the vertical line distortion issues users have been experiencing. Additional information be found in Apple's support document.

just curious, how do you fix a hardware failure with a firmeware update?

Well, ASUS fixed the graininess issue with a BIOS update, I suppose the vertical lines might was be an issue that can be undone using a tweak.

Run the fans faster? Underclock it more (and it is underclocked to start with) ?

I hadn't come across the lines issue yet - possibly unsurprising as I actually use it off the desk so with the 9400M almost 100% of the time.
