I've never tried but imagine it's much more difficult when you use encryption, change the administrator password, use a firewall, and don't broadcast your SSID than if you're using an open connection.

Edit: As the previous poster just mentioned, using a VPN is beneficial, especially when you are away from home and on an open network connection. I use Astrill and love it.

If you are on your home connection protected by WPA2-AES, it shouldn't be that easy to eavesdrop. I'd definitely use a VPN on a hotspot though.

easy is relative to who is listening. broadcasting ssid is up for debate as you have to make youself vulnerable in another way to stop broadcasting at the wireless router level. AES isn't a bad option either for home use. VPN at public hotspot is a good idea against that network. But you do have to connect somewhere so unless you have a home dmz or trust some vendor to provide decent vpn solutions then it's a judgement call. As stated in the article provided do your research.
