It would be silly to wait for 680m if it's not a Kepler.

Lots of silly people out there, just look at all the people who own 580m's when the 6990m is so much cheaper.

True, I think I would get 580m just because it's less heat, more overclock head room and already 5-10% better perf .

nVidia told us we will see 3-4x the performance per watt with Kepler, but in reality it's probably 2x per $. If 680m is just another Fermi, it's gonna be beat by a mid-high end Kepler, thus not worth the money unless it gets a price drop.

what would be so silly about that? i dont think anybody here cares about the chip architecture or layout as long as the performance values are right and a 20-30% perf boost over the 485M could already be worth an upgrade!

well of course, but the question is: WHEN will we actually see Kepler in mobile gpu cards? i highly doubt it being released in 2012, when the 680M is set for a summer/fall release. so ud have to wait at least till Q2 13 for an architecture change.

    cheers

heh i guess so . But I'm coming from a 4820TG, and if I can, people with a Clevo can .

I think if Kepler is not out by April, I'm going with AMD.

Is the 6990m in the np1850 user replaceable? On the option it states "User upgradeable" on the GTX 580M but not the 6990m, does this mean that the 6990m is not on a MXM 3.0B board/slot that can be replaced with another?

the NP8150/P150HM sports a MXM 3.0b slot, so all gpu cards offered with that laptop have to be of the same MXM version (thus 580M and 6990M both are MXM 3.0b cards). u can throw in whatever 3.0b card u like, as long as its supported TDP and BIOS/EC-wise.

    Cool, thanks.
Just didn't know why 580M showed "User Upgradeable" and 6990m didn't scary

i dunno. the plans presented so far probably only apply to desktop gpus. its not that uncommon for the mobile chips to be one generation behind their desktop counterparts concerning their architecture. and if the rumors and leaks are true concerning the 600 series to be Fermi (albeit with a possible die-shrink), then a potential 700 series with Kepler chips wouldnt be widely available until spring 2013. so yeah, lets hope that the AMD 7000 series will already be GCN and kick some performance-wise

    cheers
