If you order a copy of windows with your laptop these are OEM licenses, so they will be tied to the original laptop hardware.

Resellers correct me if I am wrong.

You are thinking about office, windows is supposed to be a one shot deal, at least the OEM copies.

Yeah, the Educational Licenses can be used on multiple computers, last I knew it was 3 computers, but you also can only buy one a year, or at least from my University you could.

Yeah but I have one address from college, one from my law school's university and a third from the law school itself (edu addresses). Then I have my wife's law school address so thats more than enough educational licenses for me.

If I buy a laptop sans a hard drive and do a direct install of my old hard drive (from my old laptop) into this new one, will everything run as is? (albeit faster) I have an educational license Windows 7 Pro.

In theory it should work. Thats a HUGE theory and it probably would never be stable, nor is it ever recommended to do something like that. If your moving from a whole different hardware setup the suggestion is to do a clean install.

No, it probably won't. In theory, it should. But Microsoft has Windows set up to notice this kind of thing and you'll have your copy invalidated when it senses such a huge hardware change (mostly due to the change in motherboard).

You may get lucky, but I wouldn't count on it. Windows tends to tie itself to the motherboard, so you'd have to reinstall if there were drastic hardware changes.
