If you have $500 to spend... why not save it for another system that would be more future proof for performance and upgrades.

... or you can just get the barebones of a nice mid-range gaming notebook for under $500.

A Nvidia 9600M GT will definitely beat out your old Nvidia 6800.

And you can install your RAM and HDD in there with no issues... just need to get a CPU.

I've got a D900T that's labeled as an Area 51m 7700 only it's confirmed to have a shot hard drive controller, and I can theorize that it has a bad video card as well... Which is an NVidia Geforce Go 6800. Diagnostics says I need to replace the motherboard, but I've only got about 500 bucks to blow on parts.

Anyone got a solution for me?

if you have a bad video card i can sell you my 6800 go from my dead d900t if you like. my d900t has a dead motherboard (again).
