the ViDock should be compatible with almost all current notebooks... as long as the software and the drivers are stable.

but the GTX 280M inside of the D900F will already outperform the ViDock's mid-range ATI card.

DIY ViDock has done pci-e scaling analysis. A HD4870 loses > 50% FPS performance going from x16 2.0 to x1 1.0 speeds. Expressport 2.0 is not so bad, average of 16.5% loss in performance. My understanding is Nvidia places more load on the pci-e bus, so it would be worse. To get desktop graphics performance on a notebook requires this project to become a reality. External 16x pci-e bus extender using MXM slot.

IN any case, you can already connect the GTX280 using hwtools' PE2L.

What are the improvements on the ViDock4?

Vidock 3 and 4 should be coming soon. I know the Vidock 3 will support up to the ATI Radeon 4770 and the 4 will support up to the 4890. They don't detail what nVidia cards they'll support as far as I can find. The casings for these 2 versions are longer and wider to support the size of these more powerful cards. I know at least the 4 also has USB ports so you can keep all your USB devices connected to it so you only have to plug in the vidock to your laptop instead of all your USB devices too.

Don't know how long "Soon" means, but Vidock3.com and vidock4.com just got opened with a coming soon banner on each. Hopefully those get posted soon so we can get more detailed information on them.

I've made as a value proposition comment of a US$456 HD5770-Vidock4 versus US$300 GTX460-768MB DIY ViDock here. The US$300 GTX460 being the higher performer on a Intel x1 1.0 link.

Part of the reason for the NVidia Fermi gpus being faster performers is due to them using the full x1 1.0 bandwidth on Intel chipset notebooks. ATI cards are only using 70-80% of bandwidth as explained here. This is probably a handshaking issue where ATI cards only run half-duplex.

It might be possible to use a ViDock4 + patch through an additional ATX PSU to provide another 75W power to drive a GTX4xx.
