Re: **OFFICIAL W860CU/NP8690 Owners Lounge**
5870M heatsink works just fine. I have one of these. Installing the new card I saw that the previous owner had just ground away in certain areas to make room for a couple of chips. Modifications are pretty small. I didn't think to take photos

Unfortunately until I can get my problems sorted (hopefully CPU related) no further things can be done. Good thing is the card works fine. The card is a Dell OEM black 6990M.
Also thanks to the GPU not being the problem I now have a spare 6970M lol. Once I have sorted things out I will put it up for sale. Obviously you guys are very welcome to it

Re: **OFFICIAL W860CU/NP8690 Owners Lounge**
I have a temperature problem with my GPU HD6970M, idle Temp is about 59-63 C !!! everytime I try to play a game or benchmarking the screen goes blank after 4-6 minutes, the last temp before it goes blank (using CPUID HWMonitor) show me 80 C.
I use my GTX285M heatsink without any mod (no cutting, since I cant cut it by myself), is there a good change if I use/buy HD6970M heatsink from eurocom can solve my problem?
here is my temperature when idle (so, scary) :

if new heatsink will make a big difference, then I will buy it ASAP....please need advise from u guys, I'm really desperate here

Since you have a different heatsink on there I'm gonna guess you put it on yourself. Try to do a repaste with better thermal compound. IC Diamond if you have it, anything else you have sitting around will work too until you can get some. Make sure all your fans, vents, and heatsinks are dust free as well. Get a can of compress air and blow them out real good.

Change Arctic MX-4 to something else. I use MX-4 before & my temps also look scary.

Anything other than MX-4. I only have use MX-4 & Shin-Etsu G751. The latter works great for me. G751 is the weakest Shin-Etsu. So, X23 should be OK I think.

Re: **OFFICIAL W860CU/NP8690 Owners Lounge**
Isn't there a chance you might have to unlock some part of the laptop to tell it to run with such high wattages? I don't know about the 6970M laptop, but yours could definitely need some extra drivers or something.. I'm really unsure as to how BIOS works this is just my inner noob speaking right here.

Re: **OFFICIAL W860CU/NP8690 Owners Lounge**
Ah I really wish I had taken a pic of my 6990M with heatsink and thermal pad placement (I just copied the exact placement as on the 6970M. I haven't been able to check temps as only have safe mode functionality until I get new CPU but should be fine as the heatsink fits perfectly.
I belive the one I have is the 5870M heatsink and it has been modified underneath in two areas. First modification is to make room for the long thin chip toward the bottom right of the card (while card in is machine) this chip in just underneath the row of three bigger square chips. The previous owner simply ground the copper away underneath to leave a neat valley allowing the thinner chip to fit nicely. The other modifcations seems to be along one set of VRAM modules where again some copper has been ground away.
I really hate taking GPUs apart so I am afraid unless I find my temps out of control I won't be taking it apart again just to take pics.
@jpeeves this problem was exactly the same with the 6970M installed. I mistakenly thought the 6970M was the culprit and got a 6990M only to find the problem still exists. Feel very silly and considerably poorer. At least the 6970 will go for a good $300 still.Alienware M15x | Intel i7 920XM | 1080p | 8GB G-Skill | Samsung 470 256GB + Hitachi 7k500 500GB | AMD 7970M @ 950/1450 (1.05V)| External Sony BD5500S Bluray | Windows 7 | 240W + 9 cell | Bigfoot 1103 | USB 3.0 |

Re: **OFFICIAL W860CU/NP8690 Owners Lounge**
You definitely need to either modify your heatsink or buy one that has already been modified. Your main problem is not the thermal paste, but the fact that the heatsink is not making proper contact with the die. replacing the thermal paste will not do you any good until there is proper contact.
When applying thermal paste I foun that "more was more" (the die is quite big) and that it was necessary to place the paste towards the part of the die that "points" to the front of the notebook (hope that made some sense), so that that the paste will spread evenly.
But again, mod your heatsink or buy a modded one ASAP to see normal temps again.
On a different note:
Does anyone know where I can buy a new VGA-Box? Or does anyone have one spare?
