Default And I thought I was done.......

Just when I thought I was done for a while, I moved some 28s, and found some CF-29s I hadnt finished. I found the notes I attached and started working backward, But, a few of them just dont want to play nice.

First one, CF-29HTM50BM (YEP THATS THE MODEL, not sure what the numerals mean and configurator wont help) but no matter what I do, wifi wont work.

I install and re-install, then change cards and reinstall, still no joy.
THEN, I remeber a thread here where someone said you should always check under the antenna nubs, and so I did and sure enough, no antennas or wires.

Now I have a spare set, but snaking the wires through all of it means a complete tear down, crap, not happening. I also notice this one has the little sliding door in the middle of the media bay and the extra connector inside, so if memory serves, I think someone said these were some kind of testing units.

SO, does anyone know if these units have any enhanced value, or anyone still want these over the standard 29s for any reason?

The other one was CF-29MTQGZBM, and no matter what I did, I couldnt get the sound to work. Not wanting to ignore the progress made above, I tried switching the speaker first, no luck. Then, I saw even though it was a 1.6, it was still a mark 4, and didnt use the mark 5, sound driver. I reinstalled the drivers and still no luck. I tried every page I could find to insure no mutes, and that the system recognized the drivers, but couldnt find the problem. Checked the 29 FAQ but not discussions on sound issues that jumped out at me.

SO, anyone have any idea what might be causing no sound?

    Thanks,

    Sam

The easiest way to check the m model speaker problem is to use a factory restore disk. If no sound then look for mute boxes. I had a Mark four that I fought with. Factory restore fixed it. Then later a Mark 5 and again factory restore. There is some hidden glitch that causes this. I assume you set to default in bios. I wonder if pulling the cmos battery and then holding power switch on for a few seconds x 3 times or so would reset it?
What kind of shape is the htm50 in. I have a lid that would fix it.

You can also just tape the antennae under the plastic piece above the keyboard. It wouldn't be as effective as the originals, but it is cheap and easy and will work decent.
I think SBC units have gotten a bad rap. If it looks decent and you can make it work, who cares who owned it first? It MAY need a bit more work than another unit, but so what?
The main issues with SBC units seem to be heat ruining the touchscreen and melting the keyboards. Both issues are very repairable.

When they "fixed" the Toughbook Configurator it stopped responding to the configuration of Special Order models (like the SBC unit here).

Nevertheless; that's the Mk3 SBC model: addressed in other reply.

Make sure the Wi-Fi is turned on in the BIOS.

Obviously, someone removed them, as the unit was Wi-Fi from the factory.

That's the access port for the tester wires for the Tempo VIP Sidekick Tester or ADSL Loop Validator.

SO, does anyone know if these units have any enhanced value, or anyone still want these over the standard 29s for any reason?

We've run into that problem before, and it took a reinstallation of the factory hard drive image to correct the "No Sound" problem.

    YMMV.

Thanks guys, I'll try a factory restore disk and then just break down and tear the other apart to put in the wireless.

One question begs here: does the lid have the pull-up WWAN antenna on the top left; and does the lid still bear the SBC logo decal where the rest read TOUGHBOOK?

If not, the lid may have been changed out and may not even bee Touch Screen.

Hey old research wizard.(TC88) Back a while ago one of the TB techs wrote a little deal about the mysterious sound glitch. Do you recall it. I looked but haven't found it yet.
In ignorance it's like the sound status is saved with the password or something. i.e. you can use a working drive from another identical unit with sound but it doesn't work on the cripple. Factory restore fixes it.
Probably a related issue is where you dual boot and mute sound in one o.s. and that mutes sound in the other.
Where is it saved?,,,has to be on the board somewhere.
    Ready, set, go.
