If they are getting to the point where a warning is necessary do you really think one email is going to change that? If I got an email from Amazon stating that "we regret to inform you that any further refunds will result in the termination of your account," I'd simply stop shopping there period. They might as well save themselves time and guarantee the customer is never a problem again.

Sorry for the long post. I just had a disturbing experience with the big "A". The short story is: I ordered 1 phone from Amazon, they shipped 2. I never had to return anything that I ordered, so this was a first for me.
    The long story is:

My daughters phone broke. I ordered a replacement phone on the Amazon site. I paid for 2 day shipping, because the daughter "just can't exist without a phone". Two days later, 2 packages were delivered to my door. Both had the same replacement phone, under different shipping numbers. I got on the Amazon site, and clicked on the "problem with order" link. I sent Amazon this missive:

"Other info: Received 2 Phones under multiple UPS shipping numbers.
Selected Order Items: LG Voyager VX10000 Phone, Titanium (Verizon Wireless) QWERTY - No Contract Required
Comments: Under this number, I ordered 1 phone. My credit card was correctly charged $79.37 for this order. I received 2 phones, under 2 different UPS packages, on the same delivery.
The original UPS tracking number I was sent, and received for this order was:
    1ZA50xxxxxxxxxx799
The second UPS package I received was:
    1ZA50xxxxxxxxxx869
What should I do? How can I return the 2nd phone? Where? Do I have to pay for the shipping for the mistake made by the shipper?
Please contact me via the e-mail I have listed on my account.
    Thank You."

I received this reply from Amazon:

"I'm sorry about this delivery mix-up. You weren't charged for anything you didn't order.

We'd appreciate it if you could return the extra item you received. You can print a postage-paid return mailing label for this shipment using the following URL:..."

The link had a prepaid shipping label, and the RMA for the return. I decided to keep the phone that I received under the shipping number that Amazon had referenced in my order, and then I packaged up the 2'nd phone, and sent it off via UPS. OK, problem solved, right? Not really.

Two days later I received an e-mail stating they received the returned phone, and they will be crediting my account the full price of the phone returned. Even though I distinctly explained in my letter, that I received 2 phones, and I only ordered/paid for 1, they still refunded my money. I looked over Amazon's entire site trying to find some way to "right the wrong", but I couldn't find anything else I could do, other than my original problem notification. Amazon refunded my account on the same day.

This is my first experience returning any item I bought (or this case, didn't buy) to Amazon. If you read my letter, I distinctly stated the problem, and Amazon replied like they understood that I received “the extra item”. Still they gave me the money back. My problem is that I feel like a crook, through no fault of my own. I didn’t want my money back for the phone I was keeping. What should I do? What would you do? Is this a freebee, since they screwed up, or is this Amazon’s standard business model ?

That'll bite you in the rear later. You're knowingly keeping property you didn't pay for. Contact Amazon by phone and explain it to the rep.

Worst case they just bill him for the phone again, properly.

At this point all that's needed is for him to call them and give them the ESN of the phone he is currently using, so they can correct their inventory to reflect the one he has vs. the one shipped back. AT&T used to pull crap like this all the time.

    Greg,
I know you're right. I'm thinking that I'll phone them. The only problem is, I suffered a stroke in 2008, and my speech is sorely lacking. That's why I do everything in writing, and via e-mails. The stroke hasn't affected my thought process, only the right side of my body, and my ability to vocally verbalize. I hate talking on the phone. I was hoping to write Amazon, to iron the mistake out, but I thought I had already explained the mix up. They should have just restocked the extra item that I received, and not refunded the money for the phone I kept.

I guess this is the main problem with a totally automated internet business. Amazon's rep didn't really read my letter, or didn't have a "button" they could push indicating that I was sending back a duplicate shipment that I wasn't charged for.

Oh well, I'll "try" to call them tomorrow. I hope they understand stutter sputter.

Although the way they have it arranged, I have to enter my phone number in their box, and wait for them to call me!

Thanks for all the advice. (including H.A.L.9000's)

Just wondering if you're a prime member.....

I've done a TON of returns with Amazon for similar reasons. I also buy many things outside of photography. I always assumed since I still purchase enough they won't bother me on my returns which they haven't...yet. The thing is if my high photography return rate affects my Amazon status I would be upset. If Adorama or B&H said they didn't want to do business with me anymore I would be okay with it. Since I use Amazon for much more than photography that would be a bigger problem.

In the end seeing something like this will just prevent me from using them for photography products but maybe that's what they would prefer anyway.

Remember way back when, when Newegg was sending out boxes of the first Eee PC's, thinking it was one large box per netbook, when it turned out it was 5 netbooks per large box? Many people recieved 5 netbooks, and it turns out that the law is, if you recieve something like that, it is legally considered a gift and you are not obligated to return it or pay for it.
I don't condone that practice, but that is the law.

The poster has made a good faith effort to get things corrected; why should he waste even more of his time?

Something similar happened to me, I got a set of speakers from dell, they were defective, so I contacted them for a replacement. They sent me a replacement but didnt send me a return label to return the original speakers. I called them again, they promised they would send me the label, they didnt. I think I called them once more, same deal. In the end I said huff it, and stopped wasting my time and kept both sets. They never did contact me again.
