[RANT] You know what's more annoying than poor grammar?
When someone tells you that you have no right to criticize their grammar when you explain to them that you can't read their messages because of their (lack of) grammar.
So I was texting back and forth with someone, and I couldn't understand half of what she was saying because her wording made her messages almost illegible. She finally manages to explain things clearly, and she says, "I guess I have to tell you step-by-step in order for you to understand".
To which I replied, "Not necessarily. It would be easier for me to understand if you did a better job at wording your texts."
She replies, "You have no right to tell me how to text".
Excusez moi, but how else am I supposed to understand what you're trying to say?! It honestly feels like I'm trying to read another dialect for pete's sake!
So then I apologize and tell her that it was only meant as a helpful suggestion, not a criticism. She then tells me that no one else has this problem when she texts them, and that I can't tell her what she can and can't do. Later on, she tells me that friends accept them for who they are. Okay, but how am I supposed to accept that when I can't read half of what she's writing?!
And just now (several hours later), she started going on and on about how I have all these things that she doesn't, and how my life is so much better than hers..... all because of my "criticism" of her texting style. JUST MOVE ON ALREADY!!!!
*Bangs head against wall*
Sorry, I just had to get this rant out of my system.

Re: [RANT] You know what's more annoying than poor grammar?
HT's post says it all.

Hey, I took French in school for 8 years. I can speak it with my Swiss and French friends. I get to Haiti and I could barely understand a word they said. Not only is it a different dialect of French, but there are accents and colloquialisms. But then one day, it clicked. It was like some miracle where my ears were open. A "he who has ears, let him hear" type thing.
Saying that to say this; give it time. You'll figure out her mode of communication. Try to get what you can and ask questions for what you can't. And soon enough, it'll click in your mind.Brand new, secondhand.

And what's worse is that this retarded text speak is making its way into schoolwork now.

Re: [RANT] You know what's more annoying than poor grammar?
Ah, I understand what you mean. I had French in high school and college. Thought I was big stuff. Then I dated a French chic and spent a summer in France with her and her family. Wow. I didn't even recognize the language. Same here, then one day it clicked. Actually, New Year's Eve, had a party with her friends and family at her house, I got drunk as a skunk and was speaking fluent French and didn't even know it. Next morning, her mother (who barely spoke English) started speaking to me in French and I couldn't understand a thing, lol. I think it's all about inhibitions. Of course this is taking it off topic, but it rang a bell with one of my three remaining brain cells.
Yeah. It's too bad because you see all the shortened text and abbreviations everywhere now. Advertising even. It drives me nuts. I think this huge boon in tech has been great over the last couple decades but the result it has on speaking and writing is horrific.

Re: [RANT] You know what's more annoying than poor grammar?
Pretty soon nobody will speak, they'll just text everyone. My niece does it to me all the time. I'll be at my sister's house and my niece will text me sitting right next to her... sigh.
