    Have you not read the release?

    It beats the 550D easily.

    -> from Canon Rumours:
    EOS 600D – key features:

    18-megapixel CMOS sensor
    Scene Intelligent Auto mode
    Full-HD EOS Movie
    On-screen Feature Guide
    3.7fps continuous shooting
    Wide-area 9-point AF
    1,040k-dot vari-angle 7.7cm (3.0”) screen
    Basic+ and Creative Filters
    Built-in wireless flash control
    Canon T3i/600D Announced Canon Rumors

    By this argument it's actually better than a 60D.

    And if you read the article digital zoom without loosing resolution - apparently they just use a closer spacing of pixels when "zoomed in".

    So it crops video better than the 550D? I know the 550D did a 7x video crop at a lower res.

    550D features
    * 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor
    * DIGIC 4 processor with ISO 100-6400 (Expansion to 12800)
    * Continuous shooting at 3.7fps
    * Full HD movie recording with manual control and selectable frame rates
    * 7.7cm (3.0”) 3:2 Clear View LCD with 1,040k dots
    * iFCL metering System with 63-zone Dual-layer Metering Sensor
    * Quick Control screen to change shooting settings
    * Exposure compensation +/-5 stops (although viewfinder scale is still +/-2 stops)
    * Select maximum value for Auto ISO
    * External Microphone socket
    * Movie crop function
    * Eye-Fi connected functions compatibility
    Even the 550D is too similar. Besides an articulating screen and there isn't enough there to justify the upgrade.

    -> apparently this one does from 3* to 10* while retaining full HD

    The low end rebels are mainly aimed at the new customers, not at "internal upgrades" -> the 550D will remain on the market, it won't compete with it.

    550D users are expected to go 60D/7D/5D Mk II - not all do, but still.

    You could argue the same for any laptop - why go SZ1 to SZ2, there is no noticeable difference... or SZ6 to SZ7 - some people do, most don't.

    And Nikon isn't doing anything differently - or are they lacking?

    For the new 18mp sensor on the new xxxD series cameras, I would wait and see what the IQ is going to be compared to existing models before declaring them better.
    More pixels closer together may cause problems at higher ISOs resulting in grainier pics.

    HDR is a cheap trick compared to proper filtering.
    If you see a beautiful landscape taken by someone who knows their stuff and has the equipment, it will never have been taken with HDR.
    That said, it has its place if done well, most don't do it well.

    A cheap one, just a cheap black backdrop and a little lighting.

    With Nikon most of the time it's a replacement. 3000 to the 3100 and soon the D5000 will get replaced with the D5100. The D90 is getting replaced by the D7000 but will last at least a year into the D7000's production. Point being is the D3100 and the D7000 are vastly different than their predecessor and the D5100 should be completely different than the D5000 when introduce.

    What will be interesting is how different the D300s replacement will be than the D7000. The new body should be bigger maybe a few more MP but I'm not sure what else will be upgraded.
