Default What is the correct pronunciation?

    GHz

    giga-hertz

    or

    jigga-hertz

I've been saying "giga-hertz" for years but according to my fields teacher (he has to be over 85 years old), it's pronounced the second way. Something to do with the prefix 'giga' and gigantic. Can't recall exactly.

    Like Lady Gaga but Giga...

I'm sure you could pronounce it either way, but the real way is GIGA.

Dictionary.com shows it as "Giga" only and Meriam webster shows both ways.

How often have you heard someone say "Jiggabyte" or "2.4 Jiggahertz". Almost never.

Surprisingly most of my engineering professors also say it like "Jiggahertz". Though I don't think they would say "Jiggabyte". lol

I believe the "old" English way is "Jigga" but conventional way is "Giga". Considering your professor is older he's probably just sticking with his traditional pronunciation. Ask anyone in the tech industry, I'd bet 99% say "Giga".

I thought "Jigga" was only in French?

I use "Giga" if I'm in English.

Giga- - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In English, the initial g of giga can be pronounced /ɡ/ (a hard g as in giggle), or /dʒ/ (a soft g as in its Greek root's meaning, giant).[3]

This latter pronunciation was formalized within the United States in the 1960s and 1980s with the issue by the US National Bureau of Standards of pronunciation guides for the metric prefixes.[4] A prominent example is found in the pronunciation of gigawatts in the 1985 movie Back to the Future.

According to the American writer Kevin Self, a German committee member of the International Electrotechnical Commission proposed giga as a prefix for 109 in the 1920s, drawing on a verse by the humorous poet Christian Morgenstern that appeared in the third (1908) edition of Galgenlieder (Gallows Songs). This suggests that a hard German [ɡ] was originally intended as the pronunciation. Self was unable to ascertain at what point the alternative pronunciation came into occasional use, but claimed that as of 1995 it had died out.[5]

In a poll in 1998, phonetician John C. Wells found that 84% of Britons preferred the pronunciation of gigabyte starting with /ɡɪ/ (as in gig), 9% with /dʒɪ/ (as in jig), 6% with /ɡaɪ/ (guy), and 1% with /dʒaɪ/ (as in giant).[6]
