Re: Post Your Last Purchase
Yeah, I'm going the AMD route. It's not the most impressive chip or motherboard but I like the price. I got the combo and saved about $23 just by doing that.
I'd eventually like to upgrade to a Phenom II X4 but I'm waiting for the prices to drop. I should be fine with the dual core for a while since the only intense stuff that I plan on doing with the box is some video encoding.
GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H
AMD Athlon II X2 240
Here's a link to the combo deal.
I'm really excited to put it together! I think my brother uses the same CPU in his desktop with solid results. I've been looking at AMDgeeks.net and there's someone that managed to overclock it quite nicely, as well.Black Apple Macbook :: Presonus Inspire GT Audio Interface :: REAPER

i loved putting my desktop together (in sig) it was my first build and even though i needed to get a little help with it i am still happy that i managed to get it all working and everything. I think that my next build...not for a while yet will go abit easier. i am thinking about upgrading to BluRay and need a solid soundcard and speaker set and then i think i am done

Hardy once told Bertrand Russell "If I could prove by logic that you would die in five minutes, I should be sorry you were going to die, but my sorrow would be very much mitigated by pleasure in the proof". Russell agreed with Hardy wholeheartedly about the delights of proofs.

Re: Post Your Last Purchase
That looks like a really nice desktop build! Have you done any overclocking with the Phenom?
Bluray would be a killer addon. I was actually just looking at them on NewEgg last night. For under $60 shipped you can score BD-ROM drive. I can't wait to see the priced drop a little bit more. I'm so tempted to buy one right now but I'd like to wait until they're a little bit cheaper.
Dang. That makes me really appreciate all of the good deals that I've come across. I am really happy with NewEgg's selection of combo deals. They offered the motherboard that I wanted with a bunch of different processors. The Athlon II X2 240 OEM was the cheapest of the bunch. It still seemed to offer the best performance for the dollar of any other option. I did have to buy a CPU fan and heatsink but I'm sure that the one that I found is as good as or better than the one that's included with the retail boxes.
If it struggles with keeping it cool then I'll just have to upgrade and drop an X4 in there while I'm at it.
