Apple Unveils 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display Discussion

Apple unveiled the 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display at today's Apple Press event. The notebook will look to offer the same visual experience as its 15-inch counterpart, and will be available for purchase starting now for $1,700.

I was going to complain about $1700 for a high-res 13" screen, a thin-and-light-case, a dual-core (full-voltage) CPU, and no GPU, but then I remembered that that pretty much describes the Vaio Z (without the Power Media Dock, which is now an extra-cost option).

Z starts at $1599 for the same spec of $1699 rMBP13, except being 0.1" thinner & 1lb lighter with a 1920x1080 96% aRGB screen instead. Given these, I would say Z is a bargain compares to rMBP13. Obviously, the higher resolution and better viewing angle of rMBP13 will mean more to some, not to mention the MacOS.

I am extremely happy with my 15' retina but don't know why anyone would really want the 13' version. They are trying to go after photographers and power users, but no dedicated graphics card... come on? Also my theory on 15>13 is that if the entire selling point is the sharpness and clarity of the display... won't getting a smaller one take alot away from that? I can get by using the 15 display for just about anything, but when I use a 13, I feel like I don't have enough space.

Either way, its not a bad product if you have money to burn and want a great display, its the one to get.

Yes, and also Sony Z if priced with i7 Quad core, 256GB SSD comes to 1999 vs Mac Pro 13 which is 2199 with dual core i7.

I am dissapointed with dual core i7 in MBP 13 Retina one. 200 dollars more for 1) diff in processor 2) 1lb more than sony Z.

I wouldn't call either of them a "bargain."

13" laptops are super duper portable. I know 15" retina is lightwt portable and looks nice but Sony Z 13 or even MBP Retina 13 are just awesome. I have looked at Sony Z and its very impresive. Very light weight and easy to carry around. Cant wait to see MBP Retina 13 in stores.

For me that resolution is great for coding. More screen real estate and so much clarity.

If given the choice now, I'd still choose the 15" because of the physically bigger screen and more powerful options (and the fact that for a 15" it's thin and not that heavy), but this 13" one seems like a nice alternative. It seems pretty pricy though, in terms of being the new commonly-seen student laptop, the way the regular 13" MBP is. I wonder if they're going to phase out the regular MBPs?

As for the Z vs. MBP, I just don't think the screen can compare; it'd be nice if the Z's screen were IPS. And the Z seemed relatively flimsy to me, something I doubt the retina 13" MBP will seem.

I really doubt they are going to phase out the regular 13... but then again, I guess they could and hope that everyone buys an Air. It seems like every classroom in my school is filled with 13' pros. For a great majority of what students use their computers for, an Air would suit them just as well.

The problem with this pricing, is that it puts you too close to the rmbp15, those 400g of weight difference is what its going to make or brake for a lot of people
