Acer Introduces The Aspire S5 As The World's Thinnest Ultrabook Discussion

Acer America today announced the U.S. availability of the Acer Aspire S5 Ultrabook. Billed as "the world's thinnest Ultrabook," it measures .044 inches at its thinnest point (.59 inches at the thickest point) and weighs 2.65 lbs ... making it roughly the same thickness and weight as a pad of paper. Acer also took this opportunity to announce that the Aspire S3 (Acer's first Ultrabook) is getting refreshed with a 3rd Generation (Ivy Bridge) Intel processor, solid state drives and a new champagne color.

I am looking forward to getting the new S5 in our test lab to see how the "MagicFlip" panel works (and how well its built). I like the idea but at the same time I'm a little worried that panel might prevent you from using the ports it the "MagicFlip" button breaks. I'll have to see when we get our hands on a review unit.

I very much like the fact of that new 1000 cycle battery technology, which as far as I know, you could only find in apple laptops? Never expected such quality from acer, but then again the price is very high aswell.

Are there options for a matte, or higher resolution screen?

Knowing Acer, I'm reasonably certain there will be configurations (SKUs) of the new S5 with a higher resolution screen but at this time Acer has only given us in formation on one SKU of the S5 ... and that one has the 1366x768 resolution.

So close, yet so far away. Classic Acer craptastic 1366 x 768 display in a $1,400 ultrabook? Hard to believe they're going to sell a whole bunch of these.

This unit needs an HD+ IPS 350+ nits display and a $400 price drop. Thunderbolt port is decent. 35W Quad option would be nice too. Get with it Acer.

That must be getting close to a knife-edge. Will they be allowed to be hand carried on planes? Worse still, the security authorities will ban all computers in case they have sharp edges or corners.

I'm not too worried about the "knife edge" but I am worried about how the Li-Polymer batteries used inside these Ultrabooks are going to manage as the OEMs keep pushing for thinner and lighter laptops. Li-Polymer batteries don't work so well when they're wrapped too thin/flat (which is increasingly happening as Ultrabooks get thinner and thinner).

I like that Acer is making promises about the battery longevity and hopefully that means the chemistry and production process of the battery packs is getting better at accommodating these thinner form factors, but charge capacity loss and swelling are still things I worry about with enclosed Li-Polymer batteries that cannot be replaced by the owner.

Amen. I can't understand why anybody would be willing to pay even remotely close to $1000 for a notebook with such an awful screen. Unless they plan on using at a desk with an external monitor all the time ... but then why would they need an Ultrabook?
