Default NVIDIA Announces New GeForce 600M Series Graphics Discussion

Today NVIDIA announced an all new line-up of notebook graphics processing units (GPUs) promising unprecedented performance and incredible power efficiency to enable gaming and 3D rendering even with thinner and lighter notebooks like ultrabooks.

The new GPUs include the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M, GeForce GTX 670M, and GeForce GTX 660M in the "enthusiast" segment (hardcore gamers); GeForce GT 650M, GeForce GT 640M, and GeForce GT 640M LE in the "performance" segment (multimedia and basic gaming) and GeForce GT 620M in the mainstream segment.

Here's hoping that Apple will switch back to NVIDIA for the next MacBook Pros. Maybe a 15" MacBook Air with one of the Kepler GPUs?

That sure would be nice. NVIDIA reps refuse to make any comments about Apple, but they did acknowledge that every PC company that currently uses NVIDIA GPUs in notebooks is signed on to release notebooks with 600M series graphics later this year.

I am really surprised to see memory bandwidth of 128 bit in GTX 660m,i mean seriously i should be at least 192 bit.
So overall all kepler based Gpus are restricted to 128 bit which will not unleash their true potential.

Farsang, I'm speculating (with ZERO real proof) that the Kepler-based GTX 660M could have handled higher memory bandwidth but that would have made the Fermi-based GPUs even less appealing.

Since NVIDIA isn't ready to role out Kepler in the highest-end mobile GPUs I "suspect" they had to make the best of the Fermi chips ... even if that meant not pushing the Kepler GPUs to the limits of their performance.

Regardless, the Kepler GPUs are a HUGE step up from the equivalent 500M series GPUs from last year. We should have a gaming notebook in for review soon that has a SLI configuration of the GTX 675M so we'll know soon how the new top-of-the-line Fermi GPUs perform as well.

Nvidia likely sees little point. With a faster memory controller you can reclaim most if not all of the lost bandwidth for the target segment and you make the design easier to use due to simpler PCB requirements and a smaller footprint. It also makes the chip itself consume less power and is cheaper to make.

As far as I know 675M is a straight rebrand with identical clocks, so the results should be all too familiar. The 650M and 660M should be interesting to look at.

Will these translate into new Quadros too?
I'm pretty sure lenovo wouldn't put a GTX into a thinkpad... though the extra power/energy savings would be nice

That's a logical assumption that the new GeForce 600M series will translate into new Quadro GPUs for business notebooks and mobile workstations ... but NVIDIA hasn't made any announcement at this point.

Are there any other ultraboks besides the crippled-resolution-acer with these new Nvidia 600M gpus?
