Default Affordable and Budget Laptop Holiday Gift Guide 2005

It's the holiday season, and don't the retailers want you to know it -- this is the time of year they make their money by ringing up the registers as people buy gifts.  Laptops, LCD TVs and MP3 players are poised to be popular big ticket gift items this year, but we all only have so much money so if you're looking to buy a laptop and still have some money left over to pay the heating bills for the winter then we've got a few affordable laptop suggestions that might fit your budget.

In a 3-part series over the next week we will bring you an Affordable laptop gift guide, Mid-Range laptop gift guide and then High-End laptop gift guide.  We start with the affordable guide.  Affordable for our purposes is defined as under $1,000, when you pay $700 - $1,000 you can still get a decent quality laptop that will last more than a couple of years.  If all you want is the cheapest laptop possible, laptops about $600, skip to the end of the article to see some suggestions for the "very budget laptops".

    IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad R52 and ThinkPad R50e

Most people assume that a ThinkPad means a high price laptop.  But that's not true, the R50 15" screen series from Lenovo is specifically targeted to budget buyers that still want a quality build and ThinkPad feel keyboard.  This notebook is similar to the popular thin and light ThinkPad T40 series, except much cheaper because it uses slightly older components for some parts and the build is not quite as rugged.  All the same, the ThinkPad R50 series provides a quality notebook for a highly respected notebook brand.  The R52 is the more recent in this series and starts at around $940, the R50e is extremely affordable at this point and can be bought for as little as $600.
