Re: Acer Aspire 5020 Series AMD Turion 64 Notebook Review (pics, specs) - FOLLOW-UP
Oh my god, have I seriously just f*$£%$ it??
I've had an Acer Aspire 5020 Turion 64 for nearly 2 years now and it has served me well but today experienced a problem (possibly self-enduced) that seems to me irrepairable, can anyone offer any suggestions?
Current situation is: When power button is pressed (with battery or AC power) button lights up but there is no noise whatsoever (no fan, clicks, whirrs etc) and yet the light stays on and cannot be switched off.
Leading up to it: My 'N' key wasn't working so I pressed a bit too hard and everything went immediately dead. When I say too hard I don't mean hit, I just mean FIRM
The same thing happened last week and I resolved the issue by removing the battery pack, replacing it where it was and everything worked fine (all the while thinking 'What's going on here??')
One other thing that may be of relevance is that prior to this problem I flashed my laptops BIOS with an update recommended by ACER which apparently dealt with memory issues.
I might be persuaded to look into the inner depths of the laptop i someone feels they know what might be the problem.
** Fingers crossed **

Take a look at post #947 in this forum, where I detail my experiences installing Vista x64 RC1 (Ultimate). Most importantly I had to obtain some files from a working XP x64 installation as the launch manager did not extract and install correctly.
I would however recommend that you do NOT install Vista on the 5024 series as I found that it is extremely sluggish by comparison to XP. I have the top of the line version (Turion ML-34, 1GB RAM, 256MB X700 graphics, 100GB 5400rpm HDD) and I demonstrated Vista to my neighbour (who is thinking of getting a laptop).
Vista x64 took 4 minutes to completely boot while XP x64 took only 2 min 40 sec (defined as hard drive activity light stays off for at least 2 seconds). Putting Vista into sleep mode takes 25 seconds while XP only takes 5. Also you will have to deal with 6 UAC prompts each time you logon and if using a limited account this will reqire entering a password each time, under XP there is no such annoyance (if running as a limited account in XP you will have to enter a password 3 times).

Thanx, for information, i thought that on MCP51 it would work I`ll send you a newer version to try ( 1. i must get it to read from MCP51 2. we need to identify what clock chip is inside 3. I must implement support for it. simple but takes some time

Now I`m working on it. Got voltage adjustment for AMD K8 serie working, now I`m working on frequency/memory controller config. as i found that my DDR config is broken. I`ll post an update when ready.
