Re: The Official GT683R/GT683DXR Owner's Lounge
When it comes to Glossy and Matte, it comes down to personal preference and usage conditions. If you use your laptop a lot in rooms with windows or areas with bright florescent lighting, I would suggest you get the matte display. If you usually use your laptop in areas lit with normal household lighting then the matte display is not necessary. There are pro's and cons of both. All things being equal (same display/same gamut), the glossy display will always have a higher contrast ratio, darker blacks and more accurate colors. This is due to the matte film placed over a anti-glare display. It works by diffusing light from outside sources but inherently, it also diffuses light from the inside (the backlight). Glossy displays also come in handy if your the type of person who likes bright vibrant colors. A common misconception is that all glossy displays are said to have eye popping colors. While they are capable of eye popping colors which some like, the eye popping colors are due to improper calibration. These people usually have the brightness/color/contrast jacked up to 100%.
I don't know if you remember or not but when flat panel TV's started becoming popular, most all of them were matte displays. TV manufacturers did this because most people complained about glare (especially when watching from angles). As time went on, technology improved and the glossy film changed. Most TV's made today (especially the high end ones) have glossy panels due to color accuracy and being able to achieve a higher contrast ratio. The glossy film today is a little different from the glossy film earlier this decade. The glossy film today is able to diffuse some sources of light (not as much as a matte film) and some can diffuse more light than others such as the glossy film used on Samsung's high end TV's such as the PN59D7000. They call this special glossy film (Real Black Filter). In the fallowing link, scroll down to where it talks about the Real Black Filter and you will get a better idea of what it does. Re: The Official GT683R/GT683DXR Owner's Lounge
Hello All,
I recently bought this machine, and overall im really happy about the performance of this baby.
I was talking to a store rep from i bought the laptop, and he told that if you have an i5 cpu you cant upgrade it to an i7 cpu since it use a different mb.
Anone knows if this is true? can a gt683dx machine with an i5 cpu be upgraded to an i7?
Cheers.

Re: The Official GT683R/GT683DXR Owner's Lounge
Does anyone know if MSI has different heatsinks for i5 CPU's?
My laptop came with an i5, and the copper seems much cheaper than the copper on the GPU heatsink.MSI 16F3: GTX 680M, 3920XM OEM, 32GB 1333MHz, Samsung 830 256GB+Samsung 1TB, WD 12.5mm 1TB HDD, 1920x1080

I know the shape of the heatsinks are the same. It just seems like there'd be a reason for them using much cheaper copper on the CPU heatsink than on the GPU heatsink.
The i5's have much lower TDP's, so they'd have the option of using cheaper heatsinks for the i5's than the i7's.
The CPU heatsink is made out of lighter copper that seems to hollow; when compared to the GPU heatsink:

My 16f2 came also with i5 and what you say is totally rationnal. However, I honestly don't see any difference between my gpu and cpu copper heatsink.
As long as both my gpu and cpu are well cooled down, I'm happy!
Just get a 180W adapter with 5.5x2.5mm power tip (Li Shin or Targus), it's definitely enough for 6990m/580m.
I modified my power tip with my 220w adapter to make it work with my 16f2 just to make sure I have enough power to game with high clocks.Last edited by pau1ow; 9th February 2012 at 09:07 AM.
