Re: MSI GX740 with 5870 1gb ddr5
Thanks !
Huh, these heatsinks do look weird, especially after you bended them
I purchased these, which are more classical... : Cooltek VGA-RAM Cooler - Kupfer - beste Kühlung! bei eBay.de: Modding (endet 03.07.10 21:17:47 MESZ)
Recieved them this morning, so I guess I'll try out tonight. I hope they can somewhat meet the same performance as yours (although I haven't modded my backplate yet, except from removing the metal mesh

wat method did you use for removing the metal mesh? how much do you think it reduced temps?

Re: MSI GX740 with 5870 1gb ddr5
errr.. I used my fingers and my arms and ripped it off ?

About 2-3°C difference I think. Although ambient air is really warm these days in my appartment (definitely above 30°C) and I would need to try in a normal environment to see true results

Re: MSI GX740 with 5870 1gb ddr5
Ok, here's what I've juste done with my newly acquired copper heatsinks :

I have 3 heatsinks left now. Waiting for some advice, I'm hesitating. I can't place them on the cpu heatpipe since there's not enough room for them there. I could place some on the cpu heatsink directly, but I'm not sure if it would make good contact since there's a sort of gap there.
I could also place some on the gpu heatpipe, but I'm not sure this is good idea either. If everyone advises me to just keep it this way, then I will...
Pretty happy already, just from idling I'm about 5-6°C cooler.Last edited by Danteleet; 29th June 2010 at 05:32 AM.

Re: MSI GX740 with 5870 1gb ddr5
is it possible, could all that copper just store more heat?
more bad than good?
i wonder if theres a really low profile fan out somewhere to wedge in the laptop?+MS-1727 i7-720QM ATI5870 1GB, 6GB 1066,Seagate 500GB 7200 32MB Solid State Hybrid + 880GB Drive-Bay, Broadcom WIFI, Korg Zero8 Firewire (7 64Ult, Snow 10.6.8 5870m with working QE/CI)

Re: MSI GX740 with 5870 1gb ddr5
So far it's not doing bad, and I haven't modded the backplate yet !
Can't really test it though, ambient temp is way too high...Medion Akoya X7811

Danteleet, these heatsinks You bought are darn expensive! I've found the same heatsinks on ebay for 1USD for 8pcs. Just type in "copper ram heatsink" in ebay search engine...

Re: MSI GX740 with 5870 1gb ddr5
Yeah but they arrived in a couple days, from germany. I wasn't confident with the chinese ones sent from hong kong or whatever !
Anyways, apart from this would you say I did something alright or I should redo it? Any tips ?
