Re: MSI GX740 with 5870 1gb ddr5
@ninja2000
Only possible with vBIOS-Flash. AMD GPU Tool makes no changes at the voltage. Till now, it's seems there is no soft-mod for volt-changing.
First, automtic Powerplay as on desktop cards isn't implemented alright. Really stupid
I still have to switch via CCC-profiles or Win7-energy settings.
The vBIOS of MSI GX740 or X7811 have only 2 Clocksettings. "Power" and "Energy Saving". Asus G73 has 4 clocksettings and the card e.g. switch to an extra UVD (Avivo) setting while playing videos or youtube automatically. This would also be fine for us, because at 200/250 hires videos (1080) are stocking. OK, not really a problem
I've been using RBE 1.25 to change the vBIOS and Winflash for flashing. You could also flash with Atiflash via USB-Bootstick or so. There is also a tutorial at techpowerup.
But the Clevo is maybe a little bit different. So be patient!
The original vBIOS of GX740 (same as X7811) you can find here.
You have to set the voltage manually.

Re: MSI GX740 with 5870 1gb ddr5
thanks @tilla.
I am totally comfotable flashing VBIOS, I will use ati flash. People have been using the Clevo and MSI Vbios on the G73 with success so I dont think I will have any problems the other way.
I am currently using amdgpu tool but the fact it doesnt lower voltage is really frustrating. I get about 30mins on battery with the clevo which is rediculous!
I may just look at undervolting like you have to .95v at stock settings. Did you notice if this has improved your battery life at all? Only thing is my card happily clocks to 900/1100 so by lowe the standard voltage will eliminate my overclock.
Thanks for the link to the VBIOS. I will download it and take a look at yours compared to my clevoLast edited by ninja2000; 21st May 2010 at 07:14 AM.

!!!!!ALERT!!!!
I Just got word from Warner that the GX640 VBIOS will not work on the GX740!!! Don't do it! I was confused because the original MSI thread said that it's for both models. Here are his words:
GX640 VBIOS cannot be used on GX740 because it will kill GX740.
Sincerely,
Warner
Hope nobody bricked their 740!
