I'm not a fan of the current fit but if you can get one how you want it unlike the Sonic then maybe it's the better choice. The Sonic does seem to be a bit nicer inside, despite that annoying as hell gauge cluster....

Re: If you had $20K to spend on a new car, what would you get?
Don't really like either car all that much, especially since I think the Fit's ride is a bit too harsh and noisy. But for reliability and resale, I would definitely pick the Fit over the Sonic.
Good luck, ZaZ, hope it finally all works out

Re: If you had $20K to spend on a new car, what would you get?
I've driven a fair amount of Honda's, the Fit's road noise is no worse than any other Honda, and that's been a "complaint" of Honda for as long as I can remember. Plus you also have to realize the Fit is a "cheap" economy car, provides alot of utility for a little price. Sure if the Fit was 20k, it would have better quality materials and better sound deadening, but again the Fit is no worse than any other Honda car I have driven, and to be honest the road noise doesn't bother me, as I am always blasting music anyway.
I've driven my coworker's Aveo, which wasn't a bad car and the Sonic is a much better replacement, but my coworker has found out, it has been impossible finding replacement OEM parts off like junked cars.

Even compared to a Civic or Accord? Definitely disagree there, but yeah, the pricing and light weight of the Fit do play into it. I've never driven a Honda, but I've been a passenger in the first- and second-generation Fit, as well as the last-generation Civic ('06-'11) and current-generation Accord, and the road noise and ride is definitely better in the latter two.
With the second-worst road quality in the US here in the Bay Area (LA is even worse), you can definitely tell the difference.

Re: If you had $20K to spend on a new car, what would you get?
I'll say this, buying a car is a lot like buying a laptop. There's so many conflicting voices, it's hard to figure out which ones to listen to. One person/site like this or that car for their own reason, which are legit. So, I have it down to the Fit($17,000) and the Sonic($16,300). I offered the dealer $17,000 on the Fit with the side molding thrown in. If they accept, I'm going to get the Fit. Otherwise, I'll get the get the Sonic. I'm not so concerned about the aesthetics, but I think the Sonic is perhaps more what I'm looking for - a quiet cruiser to take to work, but better reliability on the Fit may be its trump card for the right price. I'm hoping to hear from the Honda dealer later today. Then, thank god, this will be over for the next decade or so until I get my next car.
