Default Convert External Hard Drive from fat32 to NTFS without losing data in linux

After many problems with my laptop, I now believe I need to replace my hard drive. I am trying to copy large files over to my WD external hard drive, but Ubuntu always stop at 4.3GB. I have copied files larger than 50GB before onto it from windows, so this problem coming up is bizarre. I have looked on Google and found ways to do this conversion without losing data in a windows command prompt. Here is my problem, I cannot boot my windows partition because of an error on the hard drive (that is causing me to do this in the first place). How do I convert my external HD from fat32 to NTFS from Ubuntu, without losing any data? Any help will be appreciated!!

4GB is the filesize limit on FAT32 so that behavior is to be expected.

You can't convert to NTFS from FAT using Linux. You can only do this from Windows. Make sure to do a full disk check before you do the conversion.

Check your hard disk for errors

That's what I was afraid for. I can't log onto Windows, hense the reason why I'm even trying to copy these files. I guess I will check and see if I could borrow a friend's computer then. Thanks for you help!!!
