Re: Linux on the Apple MacBook Pro 5,5 (Summer 2009)
Yea I miss it already (just shipped it on Monday). The G50V guide isn't going anywhere but it might get stale. I dumped almost everything I knew about the G50 configuration into the Linlap wiki and the howto guide, so there wasn't much to do besides keep uploading new kernel configs (which don't seem to get many downloads).
Just updated this MBP5,5 howto for 2.6.31.4 and did a little cleanup on it. Everything is running very smoothly now for me, no complaints at all except for the proprietary wireless drivers (work fine but I'd like to be able to tweak them).Sent from my immobile device using Taparock for abax

Re: Linux on the Apple MacBook Pro 5,5 (Summer 2009)
Let's get back on topic eh? This is my howto guide for MBP5,5, lulz. I'll check out Arch some time, I'm not too eager to stop using Debian. It runs on everything from my NSLU2, router, google dev phone, and of course all my lappys. That and I have about 10 years of 'the Debian way' of doing things seared into my brain. It wouldn't be easy to switch. I hear you guys tho, Arch is good for you.

Nice, any tips to share?

Edit: Are you using frequency scaling and PowerMizer for the GPU? Also what about backlight brightness, fan control, and keyboard backlight? I can get around 5hrs with everything tamed, but with my normal use I get less.

Re: Linux on the Apple MacBook Pro 5,5 (Summer 2009)
What is the typical difference in battery runtime between OS X and Debian or Arch?
Same question about heat and fan noise?

Re: Linux on the Apple MacBook Pro 5,5 (Summer 2009)
Honestly haven't spent enough time in OS X to know the real battery life... I'd say around 1:30 to 2 hrs of difference, the claim is 7 hrs on OS X and I have seen around 4-5 hours with bluetooth turned off and low backlight, frequency on minimum, no keyboard backlight in Debian.
I posted my temps already above, I haven't checked them in OS X. I'll try to remember the next time I'm in OS X to check the temps and update this post.
Edit: Added recommended packages section to the guide.Last edited by ALLurGroceries; 16th October 2009 at 01:57 AM.
