Default ACPI issues?-Overheating badly due to fan not coming on! (HP nx6325)

    Problem
Overheating badly, via a liveCD test of a Linux Distro.

    Affected model:
    HP Business Class laptop
    (nx6325 RB526UT#ABA)
    Bios F.06 , 30 Jan 2007
    http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/q.../12447_na.HTML
    http://www.notebookforums.com/thread176205.html
    AMD Sempron processor 3400+
    1.8 GHz, 256-KB L2 cache
    1 GB (667 MHz) DDR2 SDRAM (2 512mb DIMMs)
    Note: Max RAM maximum 4GB
    ATI Radeon Xpress 1150
    Pur date 10-2006

Need some ideas, from those that "know" Linux.
(I do not, last time I tried Linux was about 7?+/- years ago!)

While running a LiveCD of distro called Pclinux2007 (rev3) unit overheated badly.
    File name: livecd-TR3.iso

From the limited amount of research it appears that HP laptops ACPI does not play well with Linux?
(I plan on more than likely running Ubuntu- Or something that is friendly to "newbies")

Right now I have a XP PRO XP2 /Vista dual boot... Would like to make it a triple boot as well. Concerned on that as I've read the new Vista bootloader is differant than the XP one and how that would be affected with a Linux install.
(One issue I see on going to Linux besides the "learning curve" is about every six months a fresh install of Linux would have to be done- I'm not a fan of doing "upgrades" of OS's, I always do a fresh install.) Have set-up multiple boot OS's (various Windows 95/98/NT4.0/Xp/Linux) before, each on it's own native partition...using the XP bootloader on NTFS (even though the "offical" way to do that was to use a small DOS primary partition with the bootloader on it.

The plan is to migrate to Linux. On this unit XP PRO was installed first- then Vista. Unit is currently using the Vista bootloader.

    Getting back to the "overheating".

While I can understand a "LiveCd" not being configured right, is the "fix" to getting the ACPI/ fan to work correctly known at this time? I've read that you can turn the fan on so it runs ALL the time,(which I do not care for) and I've also read that when the unit goes into sleep mode, upon firing it back up the fan doesn't work right.(which is also a deal breaker)

Don't know a thing about Linux, seems the HP's have known issues with the cooling fan(s) not working correctly.

ATTENTION: ACPI management is broken on the nx6325 with a standard linux installation. Using ACPI, you will most likely overheat your CPU because the CPU fan won't turn on properly. After the initial installation, you should start your notebook with the kernel option acpi=off until you applied a solution to the problem. This will turn the CPU fan on regardless of load. On the downside, you won't be able to access the battery state, and worse, your dual-core CPU will only use one of its cores, but it won't overheat... During the installation (started with ACPI support), I enabled in the bios "Fan always on with AC adapter plugged in", and of course, I plugged the AC adapter in :-)

    ACPI problems and solution

    The ACPI problem is threefold:

    (1) The psmouse module is compiled directly into the SUSE kernel. This causes rebooting into a "bad state". If Linux is directly started after a reboot or shutdown from Linux, ACPI freaks completely out including the read-out of the battery status.
Sources: [1] (thread about other HP notebooks, but the "bad state" reboot mentioned in the thread is the same for the nx6325)
    http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/f...47189+28353475

    (2) The DSDT table of the bios seems to be broken regarding the methods of turning the CPU fan on.
Sources: [2] (in German; do not use the DSDTs mentioned in this thread, they are for the nx6125, but the problem and its solution are similar for the nx6325)

    http://www.linuxforen.de/forums/showthread.php?t=207282

    (3) ACPI events are not processed properly in the kernel.
Sources: [2] (in German); [3] (problem and patches for the nx6125, but seems to be still the same for the nx6325)

That is likely why HP will not honor warranties on laptops running Linux.
    "Earth" Desktop | Asus 21.5" 1920x1080 | C2D E6750 @ 3.0GHz | 4GB RAM | 500GB + 1TB HD | Radeon 6850 | Corsair TX650 | Windows 7 64-bit

bc135, yes I read that little tidbit of info, I didn't read all the way thru the post on that issue but I would assume HP rep was giving the person a hassle over installing a non-supported version of Linux?, not the supported version.
(btw: When dealing with HP, you will get reps that don't know what they are talking about, so that might have been the case as well

Read thru the dv8000t keyboard thread that is linked to in my sig, and you will see a pattern at Hp on jerking people around, no matter what OS you run....
I've had to deal with them several times, each time the time spent made me want to pull my hair out, or set my arm on fire, so talking with them would be less of a issue)

Btw: on the dv8000t, plus others alot of people are having problems with the keyboards. (I think there is info on that, AND REBUILDING laptop keyboards in link in my sig)

    EDIT: Laura Breeden's problem http://enterprise.linux.com/article....30204&from=rss
sounds like the keyboard itself is worn out, needs to be replaced OR rebuilt.

Her problem is she should have restored the orginal OS to the unit BEFORE she called them (if that OS was not pre-installed)... Restoring the OS is standard procedure that you have to do to confirm the "problem" is not caused by a software issue.

On voiding the warranty, Most mfg'a aren't going to be too happy with someone running a non-standard OS, or a installed OS that's been "hacked" to run faster- (Those hacks putting more strain on components sometimes).

Getting back to the "overheating" problem:

If using a non-supported version of a OS does cause the unit to overheat... I don't blame them for not honoring the warranty... That being said the BIOS is supposed to be compliant to some spec, and it is not in some way so they need to address that issue, honor the (hardware) warranty on a unit that say "overheated" because the bios was brain-dead (for a lack of better terms) if the OS being used was compliant., whatever the OS.

For what reason, I'm looking for a solution. If you have any thoughts on that, please feel free to add to the thread at any time.

Had run across http://daniel.graziotin.net/2006/12/...oblems-solved/ Was wondering if that is truely the fix, a temp fix, a bandaid, etc... last post saying it's a script, it not being a kernel fix.

Ok guys here's some info to add to the above, but like I said I'm lost in Linux, so that's why I started this thread.

Seems to me there are several issues:

I've got the HP nx6325 notebook which is certified for SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. But when I installed SLED 10 and tried to use it, the ACPI-Powermanagement didn't work, and the CPU-Fan didn't turn on, although the notebook became very hot. I made use of the "Pick up & Return" Service, but they HP-employees didn't recognize this bug, and the notebook was sent back to me without being repaired.

The question is: why is the HP nx6325 certified for SLED 10, when HP doesn't care about the customers who use linux?!

    Hi Christian!

    This is a big question!

You must read this thread http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/f...support/questi
onanswer.do?threadId=1026460 for the workarouns and later go to the Novell Bugzilla page https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=177963
But first, update your bios to the last version.

I remember from Novell Bugzilla there is a beta kernel for SLED10 that may give you a definitive solution. If not, the workarounds are sufficient, and SP1 (next due) will certainly remedy these problems.

    Hi Philippe.
I have already the latest BIOS Version (F 06) installed.
The keys to enter BIOS-Menu(F9, F10) don't work either. When I tried to copy large files to a NFS-Server, the notebook seems to freeze, and I have to restart it.

I hope the next updates will fix these problems otherwise I would never buy a HP-Product again.

It's a shame, that a company which profits a lot from free software, doesn't take care of this problem.

    Christian,

Sorry, I have a nx9420 so I can't reproduce your exact problems. However it seems the symptoms are very similars for all 'new' HP business machines.
I have heard something about problems with the keyboard with your model, I think the solution is to remove AC AND battery for a short time and reconnect them; with that you should be able to enter the BIOS. Another way is to boot with Windows and shutdown.

This page is more specific to your machine: http://www.wolframschenck.de/nx6325.htm

For the kernel, you may use the kernel from OpenSuSE Factory, but I think it may be a little too new if you're using SLED10 for the stability. I'd use the kernel indicated by Thomas Renninger in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=179702
(This was the link I wanted to indicate in my previous post; sorry)

For the NFS freeze, I think it have to be a problem related to the BIOS and related problems. I'd update the kernel, or apply the psmouse trick, etc... before to go further with this one.

Yes, I have had some hard words with their technical service for their <>

    Philippe.

    Hi!
You have to unload the psmouse module on shutdown/reboot
add modprobe -r psmouse at the beginning of /etc/init.d/reboot

for the thermal issue there is patch available (attached for 2.6.19 kernel)

perform the patch, compile the kernel, install it and everything should work fine

    regards Martin

Is the above the Fix?, if so how "well" does it work? any downsides?????

    Hi!

The option "modprobe -r psmouse" worked fine. That was actually the hint, the guys from the HP-Hotline couldn't tell me.

Now I'm using Debian Etch (kernel 2.6.18-4), which seems to have a hack included, to make the fan of the nx6325 working.

So.... if the above is the fix, How is this added to Ubuntu- Or something that is friendly to "newbies" install?

Details, and please expand on procedures that a person coming from a Windows environment might not understand.

usually appending acpi=off to the boot command in GRUB or at the "boot:" prompt for a LiveCD will make the fans run constantly. not ideal, but at least you won't overheat.

Thank you sir.. That's a good piece of info for someone running a LiveCD-
Question: Can this command be entered AFTER the LiveCd has booted?

I assuming that Linux has some built-in apps to monitor temps. What is the command to run a app? What monitors temps, shuts down the unit if temp goes too high, or give you a alarm of some type?

    When asking for HELP
Please take 10 seconds to post upfront Age, model number, etc in BODY of your post as TEXT

    Doing so
    Shows you respect others time.
    Helps others help YOU better.
Helps everyone as it PERMANENTLY ties the "fix", ideas presented to the hardware-software being discussed.
Makes the data viewable to search engines.

PS: The more people that post in such a manner the better search results YOU get on YOUR next search.
