    Default T430s Monitor Comparison

I was playing around with a wide-gamut monitor and had my T430s in front of it, and I realized I basically had the perfect setup for a comparison photo.

I have a Samsung screen in my T430s (LTN140KT03401). The big monitor is a calibrated 24" Asus PA248Q with a P-IPS panel with 98% Adobe RGB coverage.

The test image contains all the primary colors and was displayed in the Adobe RGB color space on both monitors. The brightnesses were roughly matched (level 13 on the T430s) and the white balance was set based on a 18% grey card. Ambient light was minimal. The photo was taken with a Canon 5D MKIII and processed in Photoshop to make the image as true to life as possible.

Below is the same photo in the RGB color space for those with wide-gamut monitors. It won't look right on sRGB displays (most), and must be viewed in a color managed browser (Firefox or Safari) or downloaded and viewed in a color managed program.

The differences between the colors are actually stronger in real life. As you can see, the Lenovo screen does a pretty poor job particularly with the greens and reds, and the photo doesn't capture how vibrant the yellow is on the big monitor. Before the comparison, I actually thought the Lenovo panel was cooler (in temperature) than it actually is. The temperature is actually pretty close to accurate, but specific colors are still pretty far off.

All that said, I still don't think the screen in the T430s is atrocious. Obviously it's not intended for anything color critical, but I've found it more than sufficient for browsing, spreadsheets, etc.

Hope you guys find this useful!

Judging from the photos I actually don't find the Laptop screen too bad. Unless I over-read something, both screens are uncalibrated, right? Calibration would hugely improve the accuracy of the Laptop screen, particularly with white balance.

Edit: okay, I over-read something. And you are a photographer, so you know everything about calibration . Why did you not calibrate the Laptop screen?

I don't use the laptop screen for any photo work, so calibrating it wouldn't serve much of a purpose. That said, when I've got a little bit of time, I'll probably create and share a profile for it as well.

What if we are viewing the comparison on a T430s screen

Thanks for the comparison. Please send us the profile if you make it.

I have the same Samsung panel and I am using color profile that was made by one of the review sites, apparently for the same display. When I compare your top picture with the color wheel linked below they look relatively similar on my screen, so calibration definitely helps. (I do not have my camera handy.)

Profile I used is attached and link to the color wheel is here:
