How much of this is a function of ThinkPad keyboards being so mostly similar over the years? After years of using the same setup, the layout is probably grooved into your brain. If they'd started with a six-row keyboard years ago, then switched to a seven row, I'm sure the transition would be difficult as well.

I do fully agree with this. In fact I'd say about 95% of my issue with the keyboard change is because I've already been so used to the old format and key pitch, etc. If the original layout were 6-row, and I have to adapt to a 7-row today, I would probably be having the same issues.

This doesn't make it any less of a valid reason to oppose the change, however. If, for instance, BMW were to change the gear transmission on its cars to work downwards instead of upwards (ie, PARK right at the bottom, while DRIVE is on top, etc) you'd get a huge uproar. It would WORK just fine, but people are simply used to how things have always been done.
