    2 questions:
    1. Is not installing the intel chipset driver handicapping my T61 in any way?

    YES

    2. Why is it that my USB ports don't work when I installed the Intel Chipset Driver?

Because you didnt install the chipset drivers first, seriously read more ......

Thanks for any help and thanks for the awesome guide.
the chipset drivers are to be installed FIRST all the time on a fresh install, they include VERY important and vital drivers that have to do with how your CPU and "chipset" runs e.g. dual cores, etc. and have to do with other key components e.g. USB ports etc. etc.

one thing i learned the hard way was the install order of drivers on a fresh install and not to deviate from it .......

it has everything to do with having your pc running to it's optimum w/o problems, glitches, etc.

    hope that helped ....

btw if your usb ports didnt work when you installed chipset drivers you can usually uninstall them in DM and reboot, should work then

sorry if this should be obvious, but, what do I uninstall in the DM before I reboot? Do I delete the usb root hubs or the host controllers found in the expanded USB Controller?

and thanks for the answer. i originally didn't install it cuz it kept messing up my usb ports, so now that I know what to do, I can install it properly at a latter date. Its been a week since I did the fresh install and I have noticed that my T61 is a bit laggy on a couple of things. I will chalk that up to the missing chipset drivers. I don't have time to do a clean install again any time soon (the 1st clean install was due to my laptop not being able to load XP) so I'll just install the chipset tonight and hope for the best. If becomes unstable, then I'll do a fresh install again.

There are 104 responses to this, and I haven't read them all!! Is it possible to create a word document (updated as appropriate) and make that available. Clearly all of this needs to be available offline if I/we decide to downgrade.

    Thanks.

i dont know for sure if you'll have huge difference by installing chipset later on
my guess is its mostly compatability issues etc., you may just be fine
sounds like usb and lag were your main issues anyways so hopefully those will be solved

after installing the chipset, btw make sure you have the right one, uninstall the usb hubs- each one, then reboot, the should install automatically with proper drivers, have for me in the past

    g'luck

    Hi guys,

i am reading through this thread and gathering what ever i can.
before downgrading VISTA to XP want to reiterate the process which i am going to do.

    1) Installed Intel Matrix Store Manager
    2) Unistall all USB Root Hub
    3) Restart
    4) USB with SATA driver
    5) Boot with XP CD
    6) Press S will detect my USB and install SATA driver from USB.

    am i correct?

    Thanks in advance

I searched the thread and forums and couldn't find this...

I wanted to do a clean install, but i looked at my swtools folder and it is almost empty. From what i can read i'm supposed to have a bunch of files in it. Mine just has one set of folders in it and a few files. The only directory is C:\SWTOOLS\TPM\AtmelTpm and there are only 6 files in there. Am i still okay to do the fresh install or will i kill my system if i don't have this directory backed up.

    Thanks,
    Scott
