Disconnecting the wire from the mobo will also disconnect the touchpad. They are on the same plug. Maybe the wire can be disconnected right at the FPR?

You can always cut the wire underneith to the FP reader...(just make sure you put some electrical tape on the end)...therefore, keeping the touchpad funcitonal

ehh I would not cut the wire. Just contact an IBM representative and see what other solutions are available.

"Thing is - I noticed I started getting zapped when swiping my finger with the fingerprint reader.
This obviously is quite annoying [...]"

This is really a funny problem! This reminds me of the time when we were kids and me and my brothers used to p... on electric wire fences around cow paddocks in Switzerland to prove how brave we are...

But seriously: When I got my new T61p (15.4''), I noticed, that the front plastic cover was standing out ~1mm on the right side. I foundt, that this was caused by one of the two wires, that connect the touchpad and fingerprint reader, which was not completely fitted into the grove, in which it was supposed to be. When I put it back into the correct place, I was that the plastic isolation was slightly damaged by the compression between the lower plastic notch and the upper cover.
Maybe this is, what also happened in your case?

(Sorry for my poor English, I hope you're able to understand without pic what I'm trying to describe!)

I think 'wutz' has the best guess to what may be going on, although I could do without the childhood memories. If that doesn't solve the problem, your best bet is to contact Lenovo.
