IBM vs. Dell model comparison reference

I'm creating this reference to compare IBM and Dell's various models, for suggesting certain models of ThinkPad to people who want a Dell.

IBM models displayed are those available on Lenovo's site, going to a series, and clicking on "All Models". Yes, the R51e is missing right now.

Dell models displayed are what's currently on Dell's Home and SMB sites, and has a ThinkPad analog. (The D410 is NOT the X32's analog. It's a Sonoma, whereas the X32 is an i855.) Some of it's IIRC.

In the center is IBM's lineup, sorted by series in alphabetical order, then numerical order, then grade (e then no letter then p), then size.

On the left is Dell's Inspiron lineup. On the right is Dell's Latitude lineup.

Since the B120 and B130 have replaced the 1200 and 2200 respectively, this has all been fixed. Changes in the widescreen area, as the B130 is a widescreen.

Added the XPS M140.

This is probably going to need bugfixes, as I don't know about other models yet.

Dell really did hide the 110L, now, didn't they? Didn't show up in the Latitude lineup... Anyway, it's added as an analog to the R50e.

I think that if you really want to fill that table out some more, you're going to have to be a little bit less picky when deciding which models are considered analogous. It would make more sense to determine analogs by their role than by exact system specifications.

Going off of that, you could say that the X32 is indeed the equivalent of the D410, as they are both high-performance 12" ultraportables with no optical drives, despite the fact that they use different chipsets.

But if you choose to keep going along the lines that you have now, I have a couple of suggestions. The X41 is very similar to the D410 and the X1 (if you ignore the widescreen - you'd pretty much have to in most cases with ThinkPads), and some R-series models have a lot in common with the D510 (15" models) and the Latitude 110L (again, 15" models). Also, the T42p and T43p models share similar specifications and roles as the Precision m20.

I understand the comparison between the models using the chipsets, but to say a T42 to IBM is the "comparable equivilent" as the 600m is to Dell, is off. While Dell no longer sells the Latitude D600, it really is the model which would compare better to the T42. As Dell has decided to leave only one option of chipsets for it's thin and light business line, Lenovo/IBM has given the option to choose which chipset to purchase in theirs.

OK, then, I'll first include last-gen Dell models (that'll give the D400, and fit in the D410 as a higher-end counterpart to the X32.)

I completely forgot about the Precisions...

I'm going to add a column for the XPS, as well, but nothing goes in there. IBM doesn't have a 17" or a gaming laptop.

Major revamps.

I was reluctant to put the X1 as an analog to the X40/41, but I did it.

It didn't let me do the D410 the way I wanted, so I'm going more role-based. This also means that the D610 is extended across the T42 and T43.

I'm a little leery of what I did, putting the M70 as parallel to a high-end Z60m, seeing as it's no Z60mp.

Dude, who compares anything to an IBM? IBM IS IBM, nothing comes close to it, well, maybe something just a bit, but not too close. Hope that helps.

HP business models, and the panasonic toughbooks are in the same build quality range

I did this because there's some people who know Dell's models quite well, and are interested in IBM, but don't know what model to get. So, this table compares Dell models to IBM models in roles.

I wasn't referring to quality, just roles.

I would never compare a Dell versus an IBM in build quality, FWIW. IBM would blow the Dell away. Or, Dell would use a NiMH battery (like in the Inspiron 2200), and IBM would kill it on battery life.
