Y470 Weak Wireless
So I bought a y470 about a month ago. The wireless card is extremely weak. It works (usually) when I am right next to my router, but if i am in an adjacent room it doesnt even work. It is reading that there is an "excellent" signal, but when i try to connect, it cant (occasionally it does though which is why this is strange). The symptoms all seem like an extremely weak wireless card or something else thats faulty. Anyone come across this before or an ideas? In the properties I have tied everything from drivers, to making sure the energy management is giving enough energy to the card.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Y470 Weak Wireless
What Transmit Power setting do you have the Intel wireless adapter set to? Set it to 5 (Highest). See Power.png
Also check the Channel. It defaults to 11 on my Y470, but you may experience interference with other local signals on that band. I have mine set to 6 due to other routers in my neighborhood using 11.
Try Metageek's free inSSIDer to check the routers in your area, and see what channels are being used.
Download inSSIDer and Discover the Wi-Fi Networks Around You | MetaGeek
There are other settings that must be synced with the type of router you have. Also, you didn't say if you are running on battery, or plugged in. Your power scheme could affect your wireless settings.

Re: Y470 Weak Wireless
No luck with any of these, thanks for the suggestions though. Do you think it would be worth buying a new wireless card?

Re: Y470 Weak Wireless
I don’t know. What router do you have? Can other laptops connect with that router beyond 30 feet? Did you check the channel usage at your location with the inSSIDer product? Do you have the Windows Firewall on, or off? You say that you have an “excellent” signal showing on the laptop. That’s why I suggested checking the transmit power on your Wi-Fi settings.
I have a Cisco Linksys E3200 router. I bought it so I could have both the 5GHz, and the 2.4 GHz bands. Then I found out the Y470 Intel Wi-Fi Link 1000 BGN only works on the 2.4 GHz band. Oh well. I had to make a lot of “tweaks” on both my router, and the laptop, to obtain maximum performance in my wireless environment.
I wouldn’t go out and buy a new card, until I had exhausted all other possible causes of your problem. Have you read the “sticky” on this thread? Perhaps you should post your question there.

Also, give Lenovo Tech Support a call, or post your problem on this site:

They’re not as bad as some would have you believe. If it is a “bad” card, they will replace it under warranty for you. Still, you should give their techs a chance to help you out, before you waste money on a new card.
If you do want to get a new card, I would advise you to look for the proper FRU in the Y470 HMM, which can be found here:

Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
