That HD 6950 1gb/2gb is a desktop GPU. It has more than double the performance of a GTX 560M, let alone a GT 650M.
That benchmark shows that there is no difference between 1gb and 2gb HD 6950 on BF3 @2560x1600 and high settings. It perfectly proves the other guy's point.

Extra vRAM is only necessary for high resolution (eg 2560x1600) settings and very high resolution textures. The only gamers who benefit from 1+gb VRAM are those who have GPU's powerful enough to handle high resolutions/textures in games, and the GT 650M is no where close to that needed performance.

If you attempt to run a game with settings that actually uses over 1gb of VRAM on the GT 650M, it would run at <10fps regardless of VRAM size. You can buy the 2gb if you want, but your laptop will never use more than 1gb.

But so is the 560ti =/ and you said the 560 is most comparable to the gt650m but the 560ti is much more powerful and is often compared to the gtx580m. The gt650m is similar to the 560m which performs like a desktop gts 450. So either way the gt650m won't be able to play at these settings anyway maybe not even at 1080p so I can't really see how the extra 1GB (actually about 650MB effectively) would make too much of an impact. I guess we'll find out when people actually get these laptops. I'm still holding out on purchasing one of these for now.

The dv6 isn't offered with anything higher than 1080p. A lot of people like to hook their computers up to higher resolution screens. If you're getting 40 playable fps on bf3 with this card at 1gb you will be unable to play on any resolution higher than 1080p. Why don't you people see this as being worth 50$? I for one got the 2gb card as I will be hooking my shiny new dv6 up to my big screen, enjoy gaming on your native display forever.

It seems like the only thing being discussed here is gaming, but as far as I understand there are other programs that can make use of the extra vram, like video editing applications and the like, correct?

    Dear HP,

please release models with the GT 650m GDDR5 instead of all GT 630m, slower than the previous model graphics 7690m XT

    signed,

Yeah it seems like all the talk is about gaming and FPS. If I was a hardcore gamer, I'd choose something with a much more powerful GPU.

I do a lot of video and photo editing. Another poster somewhere in this thread said that the 2GB video card made a substantial difference in video editing vs. the 1GB setup.

I'm a mild gamer, if the 2GB of GDDR5 gives me another 1-2 fps.. NICE. If not, it's okay..it's only 50 bucks.

If the 2GB of GDDR5 gives me a nice performance boost in my video editing apps I'd say that's 50 bucks WELL SPENT!

Yes when video editing it makes a huge difference.

And it would end up being more like 10-15 fps, but available vram also affects the temperature of the gpu. Since this is a laptop it could make the difference between burnt and unburnt knees. haha

Yes there is a slight improvement with more but I'm not seeing any with a big enough difference to make something unplayable. Personally, I stuck with the 1gb card and put the $ toward an ssd that I'll drop in myself. Really when it comes down to it, if I wanted better fps, I wouldn't be looking at a laptop with only the 650m.
Is it just me, or do neither of those links show a 1GB vs 2GB comparison? I see a 1GB vs 768MB and 1GB vs Unspecified.

You're right, but looking at most of the graphs they don't apply to the performance of mid range notebook gpus with 1 or 2 gb of DDR5. I would say they are irrelevant.

The first is 2gb vs 1gb, 2gb was the standard config for the 6950, they later released a 1gb model to save people a few $$. The second link was the only other thorough benchmark I could find on Anandtech of identical gpus with different vram amounts.

Point being, there is a difference, but minimal. Some of us think that small increase isn't worth $50, some do. These are examples from different parts, if you are concerned about the performance of the 650m 1gb vs 2gb, wait for a proper benchmark review to come out.
