Default Thinking about getting dv7 but have few q's

My father is having his 50th b-day and we wanted to buy a laptop for him. He's not a heavy user, all he does is check news, watch video streaming and play online poker, so nothing heavy on the system.
I was against HP years ago but maybe things have changed, so I'm willing to give it a go and try their newest build quality.
Costco has this one for $699 Costco - HP Pavilion DV7-4223CA, Bilingual Phenom? II N870, 17.3-in. HD WLED, 4 GB, 640 GB

Anyone could tell me how is the cpu on this unit ? I have no experience with amd cpu's and I have no clue if it's a turtle or something decent.
Also what else could you add, like build quality or screen or sound or does it overheat ?

With coupon code NB8095 (which saves you 33% off a new notebook), you will end up paying just a little more than that, and can get a brand new customized-to-order quad core notebook from HP.com. You'll want to look for the dv6t Quad Edition, under the High Performance section

These are the new line, refreshed spring 2011.
Placed order for dv7t Quad Ed. on March 17. After five delays, it arrived April 28.
Returned it after a week for an Envy 17

I'm in Canada, so this wouldn't work for me and I'm sure my father does not need quad core with gaming gpu, like I mentioned in my topic.
    Also the dv6t is a 15.6 and I linked 17.3

The cpu is perfectly suitable for the intended usage. The phenoms are slightly bit slower than the C2D's given that unlike the desktop variants they dont have any L3 cache but still the cpu & gpu should be good for web surfing, flash videos etc.

The dv7t with the i3 cpu should suffice for him and has similar performance to what you posted and costs $650 (it would be $550 if the 25% off coupon code NB7676 hadn't just expired). You can also upgrade to the i5 if you want for $50, though, only a 6 cell battery is included in the price instead a 9 cell.

There are better computers for less if you didn't have your eyes set on 17" or an HP for that matter.

It has to be 17'' and I'm not set on HP, what drew me to that model is that Costco has my back, and warranty is 2 years.

If thats the case, have you looked at this quick-ship model ? Its $579, and should be enough specs for what you are looking for, it seems.

The code for this model has been refreshed: the new code is NB7676.HP dv7t Core i3 Dual 2.53GHz 17" LED Laptop for $562 + free shipping The price is $562. If HP will not ship to you, you can try having somebody you know in the U.S. shipping it to you once they receive it.

I think costco is offering you the best deal in comparison to the laptops offered on HP canada's site.
