Re: HP DM1z: Installing SSD(not easy for me!!)
Got my new DM1z yesterday and the first thing I did was make recovery discs. Then I put in 8GB of RAM. Then I pulled out the HDD and put in a new, out of the box, Samsung 64GB SSD. I had previously changed the BIOS to boot from the External DVD( HP) !! I loaded the #1 Recovery disc and it gave me an error that said the hard drive was not connected. After looking at the plugs a few times, and still getting the error, I thought maybe it wasn't recognizing it because it wasn't partitioned or formatted. I pulled it out and put it onto a USB Sata adapter that allowed me to connect it and power it from a USB port on my other laptop. I used a Paragon Recovery disc.( my other laptop was set to boot from the DVD drive). The Paragon disc found the new SSD and I partitioned and formatted it and put it back in my DM1. The recovery disc still gave me the same error. I pulled out a retail Win 7 64 bit disc and did an install. It found the SSD right away and did the intall. I still am not sure why the recovery program didn't see the SSD. After the install I used my Sata adapter and hooked it up to my original DM1z drive and pulled the SWSetup folder off the original DM1 drive and put it on my desktop. I then opened it up and found the setup file for each of the folders, like audio, video, etc. If you are going to put a SSD drive in, it would be very easy to just pull the SWSETUP folder off onto a USB flash drive or a DVD( about 3.7 GB) before you pull the hard drive out.
After all the drivers were loaded and working,( up until that time I had no wireless connection because the Ralink drivers had not been installed by Win 7), I went on the HP website and the support and drivers page and downloaded the HP Support Assistant from a DM1 2000.( The Thermal Assistant is included in that Support Assistant). After I installed the Support Assistant, it gave me an icon for the Thermal Assistant, which allows me to change the fan settings.
I have no bloatware because of the Win7 install. I haven't checked, but I am sure Trim is enabled from the Win 7 installer.
I thought it would be easier, but fortunately I had the right tools and software to get the job done. Thanks to previous posters regarding the SWSetup folder and where to find the Thermal Assistant.
WEI-3.8( processor)
Win7 and all HP Drivers- 26.5 GB
Start button to full screen with SSD is 25 secondsLast edited by jimbo1mcm; 10th February 2011 at 03:06 PM.

Re: HP DM1z
480i standard definition on hulu works perfect. Looks like DVD quality to me. The 720P service comes with the 7.99 dollars a month hulu plus service. Like I said before, 720P you tube flash looks good at full 30 fps. I'm sure it will be the same on hulu plus if you buy into that subscription.
Adobe just released 10.2 (non beta) but unfortunately, I still see dropped frames on 1080P flash. So much so, that its not watchable for my tastes. If 1080P flash is important, then that could be a deal breaker. After reading the x120e review, it appears to fair worse.. but I think they are still working on video drivers. Time will tell if we see adobe offload more to the gpu.. which case the dm1 would not have any problem with 1080P flash.Toshiba Satellite P740 14" 720P display, 256 SSD, 4GB RAM, Intel HD graphics, 12 cell, BT, BD burner, Harman Kardon speakers, i5 2430M, 3 yr warranty and LED-backlit keyboard for $900.00 total.
