Re: HP DM1z
This is the closest I could find to a solution. I'm not sure if I completely understand the solution posted by user Dowksey, but the gist of it seems to be an issue with HP_TOOLS or another partition being setup as a dynamic disk instead of a basic disk. You can check the partition's disk type from within Windows. Run the Computer Management control panel as an administrator and click on Disk Management. The disk type is listed next to each partition in the detail listing . If the HP_TOOLS partition is listed as dynamic then that may in fact be the problem (all the partitions on my Dm1z 3000are basic disks.) Don't know what to recommend if that's not the cause. Some gooogling reveals the 501 error has plagued HP notebooks for quite a while with little to no solid information on how to resolve it.

I have a dm1z that I got back in May and it has convinced to never waste money on another underpowered laptop. It has the e350 and AMD 6310.
Is there any way to overclock the CPU to get just a little better performance? I already have an SSD and plenty of ram but surfing the web just isn't smooth enough . The major problem is the weak cpu. I am considering putting xp on it but I doubt that will help much.

I am going to do another clean install. Do I need to install anything from hp? The only thing I intend to install is the WiFi driver. Is the hp framework and other hp software even needed?

Re: HP DM1z
For me, google chrome is the fastest browser for the dm1. Make sure you install the ad block plus extension for that as well. Try google chrome with ad block plus to see if that helps before you format your machine. I prefer firefox 9 with my Intel machines and it works fast on those. But its sluggish on the dm1. Chrome definitely works smoother for internet and you tube 1080P with the dm1.

Re: HP DM1z
Has anyone tried installing OSX on this laptop?
Apparently the e-350 is now supported.
