And Intel models. Specifically my old 17" HP Pavilion dv9000 with T5250 1.5GHz Dual-core and 8600m gs. After less than a year the notebook would idle at 70c or higher and when browsing internet or when the computer was updating something, CPU would easily hit 95c for long periods and would not cool down unless I turned it off. Battery life? Maybe 2 hours.

sounds like the later firmware and maybe some other changes cured it.

Can someone tell me what the diff is between the DM1Z and the Pavilion DM1 model? [i.e. dm1-3020 and others]
Nothing needed curing, and the exact opposite is true about the BIOS update; it lowered fan speeds for the different HP Thermal Assistant profiles across 5 or 6 different temperature thresholds. It used to be slightly too loud on the default setting "Performance Optimized" but now it is perfect to me on this setting, as the laptop usually stays below 60c.

The Dm1-3020us is a retail version, with a preset configuration that you can buy from HP but also others like Amazon, where as the Dm1z is the Custom To Order from HP only, and you can choose various options like memory, hard disk, WLAN, etc. The Dm1z has several weeks lead time, where as the 3020 is immediately ready to ship.
I don't know what all this fuss about dm1 v dm1z is about, HP is stupid for still having the z on there, I think that was really just the first series that actually had the z, yet it remains on the website. I bought the CTO version and no 3G yet I still have the sim card slot. Empty mini pci-e slot as well. And my notebook says dm1, no z in sight. QuickWeb did work when I bought the machine, not sure if it worked after the BIOS update; I've since switched to SSD and left the factory install on the HDD as is. Although I never could figure out how to get into the advanced bios...tried the F10 + A thing but just got a loud 6 or so beeps.

thanks to both of you Ajack and dm1user!
I was a little puzzled by what seems like, among owner-reviewers, a tad more enthusiasm for the dm1-3020 model and I could not spot any significant differences except HP's assertion that the DM1Z is their "lightest model"... [lighter than the 110/210? .. it matters not to me].

Somewhere either on this site or similar I thought I read of a Fusion model from one of the majors which included one USB 3.0 port.... If anyone knows of such pls post. I would have already jumped on the DM1 if it had that... It may be the MSI U270 come to think of it [a model I've yet to find a domestic source for]

Yes, my Dm1z-3200 also says Dm1 on the unit, but if you open up the back cover, you get the full product number. HP does that with all its unit, i.e. they have tons of product numbers, they even have for example a specific product number for the units sold at Best Buy, probably because of the software bundle...

Also if you updated the Bios to F.12, Advanced Bios now disabled.

Windows Update; they weren't MSE updates but system security updates.

Since this thread seems to have acquired a brain trust of knowledgeable folk, I'm sorta cross-posting: the laptop linked below seems to be the most price-aggressive of the Vision-E2 / Radeon 6310 bunch. I don't think hp.com sells it direct, but rather its a BestBuy model [do they get exclusives on some models?]. Is this the mediocre 15.6" display? and the dings I've seen on it speak to low quality kbd and touchpad... it also weighs a lot and has a cheaper hard drive.
    Any other differences?

What happens to be the price on that? If it's more than $400 I would not buy it.

Agreed. I would even say that I would not consider buying a Vison-based unit for anything bigger than a netbook or a tablet.

$350 at bestbuy. That's not a significant diff from the small DM1, as firesales come around pretty regularly. I can't imagine that the battery life is all that good either. Frankly I wish HP would sell a DM1-3020 or DM1Z without a hard drive. We're all going to change it anyway.

ajack for my edification would you explain your reasoning?
