I just received my DM1-3100 and after backing up the C:\SwSetup folder and trying out a few things like 1080p YouTube, checking out WEI, I decided to do a minimal install of Win7 using the F11 function on boot.

All was well, it boots a lot quicker now and has removed most of the junk.
Only problem is, the 1080p option isn't there on YouTube any more and also my WEI score is lower for memory and I think graphics (can't remember exactly, I'm at work atm).
Are there some drivers I need to install?
All i've installed (other than what the HP minimal installer did) are updated AMD drivers...
    Catalyst Software Suite - 56.7 MB - 11.5 - 5/9/2011
Any ideas what I'm missing? WiFi and sound are working, as is 720p on YouTube.
    Thanks

Also, thanks cyneuron, I was wondering how I could get around the issue of creating backup discs without having a 16gb USB or external burner. I shall try this later.

Guys any idea on how to use the pre-installed Windws licence on Windows N Version on same machine ?

Also, in doing clean install, which is better to choose - OEM or Retail copy of Windows ? (I am highly confused on this OEM and retail thing. Have ISO of both type, tried googling, but unable to understand it clear cut)

I think you can just install genuine win7home, slip the key in and then uninstall IE and WMP or whatever.

I uninstalled, and then reinstalled the exact same drivers and all is working as it should. I am now getting 24 fps when watching YouTube 1080p videos.

Something else i've noticed though which is pretty annoying. The left shift key doesnt always work. You have to press it in the right spot (which is the top half) otherwise it doesnt register, even if the key is completely pressed down! Has anyone else had this problem with theirs?

    Chuffing nora.

I want to create a set of recovery media. The DM1-3100 says that I need a USB stick with 16GB free, so I go out and buy one (at no small expense, given that I don't actually *need* it). Insert it, run the recovery disc creation program, and it tells me that 16GB isn't big enough!

What kind of halfwit at HP got away with creating a program that tells me I need 16GB when I actually need 17GB? I've already left my DM1 on the desk for a week waiting for this memory stick to arrive - now I need to shelve it for another week while I buy a replacement stick?

Well I figured I should post my experience of the HP DM1Z.

Just to note, I am fairly new to note/net books and this is just my opinion.

I've recently returned my HP DM1 due to poor performance, performance soo bad that I couldn't stand it anymore.
Before I go into that, I would like to thank CutControl, he helped me pretty much do a fresh install and was very patient with all my questions. Once again Thanks Dmitriy! I probably have more questions when I get a new laptop.

Ok, so here the break down.

    What I've done:
-I tried the computer at the factory setting
    - I did a fresh install with all the new drivers
    - I tried out 2 other DM1's at the stores and 1 other at friends

    Usage:
-I'm the type of computer user who leaves their computer on all day for several weeks at a time and just leave it running. ( i couldnt do it with this machine, only 1 or 2 days on, for the most part and one time i left it on for 3-4 days.)
-I mostly use it to open multiple internet pages 15-20 tabs with 2 other windows with 4-5 tabs at my max.
-I woudl also have word docs, pdf, excel running
    - I would also watch youtube.
    - I even tried playing plants vs zombies with 1 window open with 15 tabs
-All these activities are not exclusive to each other, I may be running all of them, some of them or only one of them at a time.

    Problems:
-Computer is painstakingly slow. I'm not sure if I'm comparing this correctly but here is what I've tried.
    - My 6-7 year old desktop
    - my brothers 2 year old netbook
    - MBP 13
    - various models of laptop at stores
    - Various netbooks in stores.

All those resulted in one thing. The DM1 feels way laggier than all the above.
I only had a 30MB PDF file open and i tried scrolling and it jumps, its choppy etc. I also used a mouse to test, i also used the track pad MOD. It's slower.

    - The computer has problems multitasking, it is a lot slower in maximizing and minimizing, switching from window to window, showing desktop when large amount of items are open.

    So to summarize:
    -sluggish when scrolling pdfs
-sluggish from everyday windows operation, showing desktop, switching word doc to word doc
-slugglish when internet browswer is open
-slugglish when i was playing plant vs zombies.......a 70mb game.....it would slow down, then go to normal speed, and slow down.

    Keep in mind:

when you test some of the stuff I listed, it will work fine if you are doing it from a fresh start. But it seems like once the computer is on for a bit, open and closed some things, it lags down fast. Also it doesnt even take long to feel sluggish. All i have is office, adobe acro pro, AVG, Win7, chrome installed.

Also I didnt only compare to better machines, and people can say its a netbook, we cant expect it to perform, well...i compared it to a few other netbooks on the PDF scrolling and the net books won. Unless I have too high an expectation of the machine, i really cant explain why it feels like garbage. the machine seems to be good when i have 1 internet open with 3-4 tabs and 1 doc open, and you'll be fine. When as an impatient individual, I love to multitask and open 6 tabs at once, and the system can't take it. It would actually cause chrome to lag up and shown always on top, and i couldnt get it to fade to the back unless I minimize it, it seems to go away after a while, (maybe its loading?)

What i dont get is why the review is so high? I also dont understand why no one in this forum said anyhting aobut this other than that one individual that returned his DM1 due to speed issues (also a couple of others mentioned speed too i think). I know I'm not imagining things, and I tried it on 4 DM1's....so unless my expectations are too high...i cant explain why everyone thinks this machine is so good?
