However, for my notebook, I never got any message regarding customs or International shipping release or anything like that.

Now my question is, will it be driven from Memphis to my local distribution center, or flown? If it gets on a plane tonight and arrives in the city that my local distribution center is, I may just go and pick it up myself (even though the distribution center is over an hour away).

You have to call them and clear it with the distro center, 50% chance you wont be able to.

In the picture on the official hp webiste DV8T has backlit keyboard (observe the space bar). So are you sure there is no backlit keyboard? That would be HP misleading people...
