I don't have linux but could look into running it just to test I suppose... am on Windows 7 64 bit now though.

I have both those installed yes, from both new versions and the versions from the SwSetup folder.

I can run IDTNGUI.exe and it brings up the Beats Audio menu.

When I open HPOSD.exe it doesn't do anything, but the mute/brightness keys bring up the on-screen displays so I assume that is working properly as well.

I did a quick test in Ubuntu 12.04 and the volume dial and mute button both work, so let us know how you fare.

    Cheers

Just installed Ubuntu and booted into it. The mute button still works (sometimes at least...), but again the Beats actual click, and scrolling does nothing.

Looks like a hardware issue then?

Maybe I'll try and pop the bottom off and see if something isn't connected or something simple like that. I remember when I first got my old envy the keyboard didn't work, but just needed a cable to be re-inserted and was fine.

    Hopefully that's the case....

Edit: Took bottom off (just main 6 screw). Saw the little cable that I presume is the volume dial hardware. Seemed to be in working order. Took it out and put back in just incase. Still nothing out of my dial/button. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong hardware wise, or how to get at the dial itself? Seems like it'd be a huge process of 20-30 screws to actually get at it - although there are 3 that are clearly holding in the chassis for it. Cheers.

I'd call HP at this point. Sounds irritating (no pun intended)!

Talked to a chat rep last night and he gave me a few #'s of HP Service Repair places around town.

But I bought this laptop through a power seller on ebay, so I don't know if HP will talk to me? It's a refurb so not sure what warranty is like on that.

Also I can't send it away, I work in the Film Industry and can't be without a computer for 2 weeks. =/

I doubt they'll send me a replacement before I send this one back, hey?

Called HP. Warranty is 6 days out so they literally can't do a single thing for me.

Contacted seller in US. Is willing to replace it with identical model, but will require me to pay shipping (about $50 both ways), and I believe then I'd have to pay tax at the border again? (About $120).

Not worth my frustration, money or time. When I'm feeling adventurous one day I guess I'll just try and take it apart and see if I can see what's wrong. It's gotta be a sensor or something that disassembled during transport.

    Sigh.

Hmm, i haven't been following your posts but here's a little concoction i thought of. Do you have a spare hard drive sitting around? If you do why don't you plug that into your laptop and do a clean installation of windows and reinstall all the drivers from SWsetup folder and see what happens?

I haven't bought a retail computer in a long time. Mostly built them myself and installed windows retail copy myself. I'm wondering when windows 8 comes out later this year will HP offer its current customers free upgrades to windows 8? I cause i remember manufacturers doing that for windows xp to vista back then.

Sorry to hear about your hardware issue. This could turn out to be a positive experience however. If you should decide to crack her open, snap a few pictures for the rest of us so we can see the guts!

    Cheers

Haven't been on much lately but I haven't really had a reason to get on. Until now.

I received my envy 15 in late February and all has been going pretty good until earlier. The screen started to flicker. Only the bottom half. It does it randomly and when it starts doing it you cant change graphics cards and it will even do it after a restart, it just stops when it feels like it.

I don't know, I'm almost inclined to think its a bad cable, cuz I've re installed drivers, bios and neither helped....

Looks like a graphics problem to me. If it was a cable problem it wouldn't be such a specific part of the screen constantly.

Are you using the 12.4, or 12.3 drivers? Go back to 12.3 if you have updated.

Another, slightly more annoying option is to install Ubuntu quick as someone mentioned to test things earlier and see if you can repeat the issue. If you can't, it's a software/driver thing. If you can, hardware.

It's very easy to install/uninstall ubuntu now.
