all I know is that when I close my lid it'll swap to a new set of video settings.

so yeah something like that is probably happening.

Yeah I'm using VLC too, I've noticed everything but the video playing works normally after closing the lid. Is there some setting I need to change? If it makes any difference I'm playing a Blu-Ray video.

It may be getting stuck in computer only video mode, try using f4 to select a different monitor setup.

I would have gotten the envy if there wasn't the flowery thing on it but now that there's the beats edition this made my decision...

I really like the design on the regular Envy. I am constantly running my hand over the top because it feels kinda... cool. I also really like the color change that the lid has in different lighting. It looks almost black in a dark room, and kinda greyish silver in some, and a bronze when it's in the sunlight. I don't think the etching looks like flowers, it looks more just kinda swirly to me.

I have no idea, you might want to scan your computer or something. What version of Windows did you get with your laptop? I'm on Home Premium and it showed up in the automatic updates for me. Maybe there are some issues with your version of Windows, or maybe some kind of malware is screwing around with Windows Update.

I tried the other modes and only the mode I was using (Extend) plays the video at all, in all other modes the video just freezes. I'm stumped.

I had some issues with my 24 monitor. I found that disabling the laptop monitor, and setting the standalone to primary worked well. Double check your settings for do nothing on lid close, while powered/unpowered.

And in general just keep at it, it is likely some small detail being overlooked.
