Seagate Momentus XT very noisy
Hi guys, just receive the Momentus XT 500 hybrid HD today. I replaced it. And during the clean install of W7, I heard something really noisy from the Hard drive, it seems that it is louder than the default seagate 500GB one. What's going on? Why is it louder? Is there any replacement error? Something is not connecting correctly?
Also, when I look at the space available of the Hard Drive, notice that it only has 465 Go. Where are going the 35 Go?
Thank you for answering me please.M17x - Nebula Red

Re: Seagate Momentus XT very noisy
the missing 35GB is normal.
hdds are marketed that way (they market them as 1000MB per GB while computers see 1024MB per GB).
the noise...well. some Momentus XT's apparently vibrate a lot. go ask around in this thread: Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid HDD w/ built-in 4GB SSDEnvy 14

Re: Seagate Momentus XT very noisy
yea momentus XT's are noisy and may even use more power than your standard HDD, which IMO are the two things that will stop it from being a proper SSD replacement

Re: Seagate Momentus XT very noisy
not by much, depends on the SSD. If you're looking for a low-powered SSD then it's best to go for the Intel's or the Samsung 470's. I believe the Samsung uses 0.14 watts when idle and 0.25 watts when active. I'm pretty sure 2.5" hard drives use about 5-15 watts. In the end I guess you can save up a half hour of battery or so

Re: Seagate Momentus XT very noisy
Just update to the latest firmware. SD24; that should take care of the noise issue.

Re: Seagate Momentus XT very noisy
Ok thank you for your advises. Do you guy think that after a couple of days, the noise will go away with massive use of the hard drive? Maybe it is the first use which cause this annoying noise.
I really don't have enough time to read the whole topic which talked about this hard drive. I will try to read that this weekend for more solutionM17x - Nebula Red
