Envy 14 Video Driver Problem
Thread updated with exact infotmation :-
System : Core i5 450,BIOS F05 ,Memory and HDD were tested with Memtest,HD Tune and Tools builtin the BIOS and System Diagnostics
Problem : Whenever i switch to Intel GPU and restart the system on MAINS i get a blank screen in place of Welcome Screen . Sometimes i get a hanged welcome screen and on 1 occassion i got corrupted graphics (Pics below) . The laptop works and restarts normally when the ATI GPU is active . To get the display back i uninstalled the Intel Display Adapter from safe mode and updated the BIOS to F13 . The problem persisted even after complete restore and minimal restore . I also tried restoring only the graphics driver(using recovery manager) on a fresh minimal restore.

At this point of time i decided to blow all the HP stuff from the laptop and perform a clean installation .
Note : The graphics driver gets installed successfully and i am able to switch to Intel GPU . The problem starts only after i restart Windows with the Intel GPU active on Mains .
If switching works , normally you can
- AC Shutdown on Intel and restart on Intel (forced behaviour)
- AC shutdown on ATI and restart on Intel if on battery (automatic behaviour)
- Battery shutdown on Intel and restart on ATI if on AC (automatic behaviour)
I tried the following HP drivers on a fresh install after restoring from acronis true image .
I Attempt Details: -
Devmgr show two standard display adapter (one is with error)
Driver installed : - ATI sp48434 v8.731
SAME PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED ABOVE
On 1st reboot after activating the Intel GPU on MAINS i get a blank screen . I waited for 15min ,tried opening and closing the lid but nothing happened.
2nd reboot also fails.
After booting into safe mode devmgr shows two display adapters:- ATI+Intel . I uninstalled and deleted the Intel to boot into normal mode with 800x600.
II Attempt Details :- sp50027
SAME PROBLEM,SAME BEHAVIOUR
III Attempt :-
tried installing catalyst 10.8 mobility above sp50027 . Installation succeeded ,the CCC showed "Catalyst v10.8" in the info section but Call of Duty crashed .
Also there was some random behaviour. I am mentioning it because it might be useful to someone
-Installation of sp50027 failed with warnings once on a FRESH system
If the ATI driver gets installed successfully you will see a success notification and will pass the following screens
Detecting Graphics Hardware,Enumerating.........,Currently installing Ati CIManger,ATI Display Driver,Screen flickers a little ,PX Profile,HDMI,CCC
-Installation of sp50027 failed with Bluescreen when on battery
-Installation of sp48434 succeeds on battery and the system boots twice on Intel GPU. But as soon as i switched to ATI , i get a bluescreen and the system restarts after creating a dump
-When the screen goes blank sometimes you can hear the windows boot notification sound which means windows boot after the welcome screen
-When the screen goes blank there is loud hissing sound audible only when earphones are inserted . The hissing sound starts after the windows boot notification audio.
Things tried during problem :- (picked some of it from the threads)
-Uninstalling all display adapters from safe mode before a driver install attempt was made.
-Tried opening and closing the lid
-After activation Intel GPU , installed GMA drivers!! before a restart
-Installed Chipset drivers before ATI drivers
-Tried 4820TG driver
-Also tried installing the drivers on updated Windows
At first i thought i am not doing it correctly and installing switchable graphics driver must be a tricky thing but something seems to be wrong with my hardware .Last edited by aBs0lut3z33r0; 13th October 2010 at 05:43 PM.

Re: Envy 14 Video Driver Problem
Wow, strange problem. At this point the only thing I can think of is defective hardware.
It seems very odd for the Intel GPU to be defective, but I suppose it's possible.
I hope that's not the case.HP Envy 14 Notebook

Re: Envy 14 Video Driver Problem
maybe upgrade to bios f13?
it solved all my little nasty's that I had with the gpu(s)
edit: or or or....
let your system image be for what it is.
Do a fresh windows 7 install.
let windows update run. When it's done, install all the program's I installed.
Here is a screeny for ya
Oh and yes: upgrade to bios f13 asap

Re: Envy 14 Video Driver Problem
as an aside. if you update to bios f.12 or f.13 you can't do the recovery discs anymore if your envy is a 1000 series and has the radiance. (not sure about 1100 series and bioses f.12 and f.13)

Re: Envy 14 Video Driver Problem
Already tried installing the drivers on updated windows . i tried it once again after reading your post . i dont think there are any prerequisites to the driver .
@Magus Draco i already updated the BIOS when my laptop was up on HP partitions

Re: Envy 14 Video Driver Problem
huh.
I'm stumped.
I'm calling "there's a problem with the motherboard and/or possibly the processor" shenanigans.
Since switching is handled motherboard side (supposedly) and since the ati gpu is soldered onto the motherboard makes me think this is more a motherboard issue than processor.
'cause if the processor was messed up other things would happen.
it failing to install right while on battery is weird as well.
outta curiosity what power profile are you using throughout this? Balanced/hp recommended correct?Envy 14

Re: Envy 14 Video Driver Problem
Today an engineer will check the notebook for problems. HP might replace it with a new one since the case was logged under DOA .
Updated the thread :-
-Installation of sp48434 succeeds on battery and the system boots twice on Intel GPU. But as soon as i switched to ATI , i get a bluescreen and the system restarts after creating a dump
I am using Balanced power profile (the default one)

Re: Envy 14 Video Driver Problem
I'm not entirely sure but I may be experiencing a similar issue...
Occasionally, when I return from hibernation, I'm greeted with a "grey" (I call it "grey" because the monitor is on, it's just that its output is black) screen after seeing the "Resuming Windows" screen instead of seeing the Welcome Screen.
My quick fix for this is to put the computer to sleep by pressing the power button and then soon after returning from sleep. This process seems to reset the "confused" GPU issue and display the Welcome Screen normally.
Has there been any more progress on this in the past few weeks?

Re: Envy 14 Video Driver Problem
^the thread title is wrong . it was a hardware issue and not a driver issue . you are facing a common issue ...have you enabled automatic switching?
i got a new unit after 40days of waiting
