He used a LCD controller that works with the monitor he chose. What he is saying here is that this particular company will be able to match a LCD controller to work with the internal screen of the HDX.

Same issue as before in that you'd have to:

    1. Find somewhere to mount the LCD Controller - likely external since it wouldn't fit anywhere internal except maybe the optical bay with optical drive removed.

    2. You have to make sure you use a VBIOS that displays to external from post(start Up). The HDX as it is, can't do that and that is why you need to flash the MXM card with a VBIOS that can.

    3. You have to tap the HDX's HDMI or VGA out to feed into the LCD controller card.

Ah ok gotcha. Sounds pretty cool. I wonder how the Philips compares to our WUXGA LCD? A 21 inch screen sounds even better but its nice we have more and more options of what to possibly work with as far as modding. Wished I had resources right now to get this stuff done already. Wonder if anyone has whats needed to send this company.

Tested hd4850 on the NVIDIA board. No any results at all. Seems like Nvidia board works only with 8800gts. I even could not use ATi 2600 card on it.

Has anyone tried to replace DSDT table from f.35 bios to f.40 bios to stop fans completely?

Might have a better change of it working if you flash the ATI HDX9000 bios onto the system. Would recommend having an emergency recovery process in place before tinkering any further. Eg: a spare backup bios chip and socket the eprom pads. At the very least having a USB floppy to do WIN+B floppy bios recovery.

G'day guys. I have found myself in possession of one of these little beauties, it's apparently suffering from the screen going black etc. So far I've run it for 24 hrs, and it's been rock solid. I've been told it will run for a week without trouble, and then have a period of going awol. My question is, is it worth just putting up with the odd outage, or go to the trouble of having a crack at baking the video card? My sister was quoted $900 to fix it, and figured it wasn't cost effective. TIA.

Definitely worth giving a GPU bake a try. It's proven a successful endeavor for a few members here who have tried it. But if you want a guaranteed fix, a new video card will cost anywhere from $200-$400 depending on where you get it from. If you get it from HP (parts store), they give you a 90 day warranty. But that would probably be the most expensive option with eBay being cheapest.

HP Parts Store: HP Parts Store - HP Computer Parts - HP Printer Parts - Compaq Parts. Though, I'm not sure HP Australia will have the part in stock. If not then eBay with vendors from China would probably be your best bet.

First post of this thread has links to disassembly videos as well as the service manual in PDF. Also, instructions on how to bake the GPU that has been proven a successful method on a number of occasions.

Thanks 2.0, as I suspected, if I want a reliable machine I should bake it. I had already seen the first post, it was one of my first ports of call when researching her problems. As the computer is a business necessity she's unwilling to risk the bake, whereas I have nothing but parts to gain... I'd much prefer to keep it running though, as it's pretty much a classic and a worthy desktop replacement.
Her HP Australia rep informed her she needed two parts, for a total of $900, inc labour, even with the discount available buying offshore, and me doing it for her, it wasn't really cost effective. I'm possibly being a little presumptious, assuming that the only real issue is the card, but until it fritzes out on me I won't know for sure.
The service manual has already been downloaded and read, and once it goes dark on me and I can ascertain that it isn't an inverter issue, I'll likely take the machine down and try my hand at baking the card.
    Thank you for your time.

Best wishes in whatever method you choose. If you bake it, please come back and share your results.

Your problem description points to the wrong video driver.

If your "HDX" with Nvidia graphics works, then do not use a driver newer than 257.21!

Newer drivers cause a black screen with "HDX" crash.
