I honestly dont think im gonna get this thing. I really dont like the paisley etching. It is definitely an acquired taste. To me it looks quite different than a macbook. It looks like a macbook that was in a fire...like if has a dusty smoke look to it. Not looking like a mac is a huge plus for me by the way. The screen i am definitely not a fan of. Not sure if it was the lighting in best buy, but it was very hard to read. And yes i checked the brightness was maxed out. Just didnt pop at all to me. The biggest negative was the weight. THis thing feels way heavier than 5lbs to me. And when i put the slice on this thing is a beast! Does anyone have specs for the weight with the slice? Im not sure if it is because it is compact that kind of throws me off, but my wife called it HEAVY when she picked it up. The sound was nothing special either. I imagine that the experience needs to be with headphones. Im trying to cover all the bases here.... uhhh... oh it was one 500 gb harddrive as far as I could tell. The positive thing was that it was snappy as hell despite being on all day at best buy. Overall I was kinda let down. I know i have been b#$#@ about the lack of OD and the price, but for regular price (1999) it just doesnt do it for me. I feel like at 1999 it should floor me. It felt underwhelming. Oh and the screen doesnt open all the way either. Pet peeve. I hope im not crashing the party. Those who caught the deal i think still have a great buy on their hands. I just wouldn't pay full price for it.

oh and last thing. Trackpad was tricky...very tricky!
Some of these impressions matched what my feelings were while viewing it at BestBuy. The trackpad was indeed tricky to use especially since I am use to resting my thumb on the left click button which there is no button on the envy which caused me to rest my thumb lower than usual (on the frame) to get any movement out of the trackpad. Also, did you try to turn off the track pad by pushing the button at the top left of it? The one I tried, I had to click it about 15 times for the light to finally light up and the track pad to turn off. On to the brightness. Are you sure the brightness was all of the way up? Note: all you have to do it tap the brightness key a couple times, (don't hold in the Function key or it wont brighten the screen). I felt the screen was plenty bright. On to the weight. The laptop with the battery slice on it, did have a good amount of weight to it. But with the battery slice off, I felt the laptop was much, much lighter. I did notice that the screens opening range was limited, to some this may be a negative, but I didn't think it was too bad.

ok last thing for real. Not that i could push it all, but i felt no heat from it. But the slice kept faling off pretty easy. Not sure if there is a lock to it cuz best buy has it locked to the table.
normally i have thick skin. but i just sold an expensive laptop and bought this one. and i havent recieved it yet. so i will say this.

leave this thread and never return .......................j/k

you know i actually expected that from the lid. the first picture i saw with that lid design and i asked myself "wont the lid catch the back of the laptop?"

I agree with the above on one thing for sure. At full retail $2,000 I don't touch this laptop.

25% off though (launch day)? I have one laptop on order and one not so happy wife :P

Yeah getting in on the 25% off deal is what pretty much sealed the deal on my purchase. Before that though I was a bit apprehensive about putting down the list price for what you get. Did anyone's status get updated for their order? Mine's still in production despite being a straight stock model.

Under the horrific Best Buy flourescent lights, I can see why the HP's glossy screen might make it seem dim.

I was initially alarmed by my current HP's glossy surface, because I like to work outside, and any direct and bright light on the thing will reflect. You think at that moment your machine is unusable because you can't see anything on it. But it's actually not difficult to re-situate yourself so the reflection is not direct.

But I've never had a real problem with indoor light -- but that may be because I never work in the kind of total flourescent nightmare of a big box store.

I'm guessing the E15 will be similar, but better, since it's got a much higher nits count. Bottom line: If you're outside and the sun is behind you, you'll have problems, probably; but it's not hard to avoid that, I've found.

I am wondering if the "dimness" is being caused by the auto-dimming feature of Windows 7 (a carry-over feature from Vista).

It's also an advertised feature of the envy 15, an ambient light sensor that is.
