    Hi Graham-h

I would be very surprised if anybody disliked this system - It's truly amazing - We just try to fine tune it. That said if you like to play games XP it is always a better choice... I am going install it in a second partition. It definitely work great out of the box (just run msconfig and disable the quicktouch OSD, it's the only thing that could be annoying)

    Hi Graham-h,

That's a great set of specs. As long as you get one that works. if you notice anything wrong when you get it out of the box. Invoke the 21 day return policy. Don't even bother with the Robots in customer service.

As you may of read. I let my 21 day pass. So I could not get a refund.
But at least after 7 months and 4 HDX's. (I think I may have been a BETA tester for you guys hee hee.) HP kept sending HDX's until I got one that worked at the beginning of May. I thought it would have been much more easy for HP to just give me a refund instead of keep building HDX's for me. I got one that works great. It's a month old now. We have been using it as a HTPC. So far we have watched 8 BD movies with our HDX hooked up to our 61 inch TV though HDMI. I wonder how many hours the BD player will give us before it has to be replaced.
We do not play much games. But the Crysis demo worked great on it.

Just make sure you don't get talked into having the HDX sent into for repair if you just took it out of the box and somthing is wrong. Make sure you exchange it or get a refund per the 21 day HP policy.

    Good luck.

I am starting to be a little annoyed, I am still not managing to get my QUICKLAUNCH buttons to work - it's not a huge problem, but the 3 Quickplay buttons on the extreme left and the Eject button are disabled (still lit in blue but disabled) also the button on the remote used to dim lights is not working anymore... Any suggestion? I tried removing the battery as someone seemed to suggest at the beginning of this thread but nothing. Maybe I started the critical quicktouch update and that messed up something?

Any idea how to fix this?

    Hey Tinman,

really appreciate the 21 day policy...

oh, and yes, I am envious of your 61" setup; had a 42" Samsung Plasma a few years ago, and that was the proverbial mut's nuts

    Hey Black Knight,

I really like the look of the thing and the spec (except no XP option and only 5400rpm hard drive)...it's the number of faults that's a concern, especially when I'm about to hand over £1600 ($3200).

To tell you the truth I really find no faults with this thing, besides this issue I am having with the quicklaunch buttons... But it is not something that creates real problems, besides HP has this cool system for updating drivers which pretty much takes care of everything. Anyway when you look through forums you tend to find people trying to solve issues and you may end up having the impression something is not good... But you should hear the sound on this thing and see the beauty of the screen! Later they'll fix these blue buttons... or maybe not, who cares!

I read on a forum there that once u do the security update from hp's update program ON the hdx, it will disable some or all of your quicklaunch/quickplay buttons. And sure enough, i did do that that update that day and some of them stopped working. I did try all the workarounds- reinstall everything etc or take the battery out, then pull the ac plug then the 1min hold the power button to do a hard reset and that didn't work either.

At the moment, everything works with little tweaks. I don't mind now that certain buttons don't work (it drove me crazy at first) and that I have to mess with the refresh to get Quickplay to play the video from my blu ray drive. In time i'm sure everything will get worked out with later updates and drivers.
Alright that's the same problem I am having, at first I was trying to get back the sound on the volume quicktouch buttons so I started messing around and instaled the critical quicklaunc damn thing... it's so critical that messed up the quicklaunch! any fixes yet?

The 1st HDX I got in December 2007. None of the Quick launch buttons worked at all. In fact this was my 1st phone call to support.
Not knowing any better I followed their instructions and as they had me do. Install the previous version of the Bios.
This fixed the the QL buttons. But screwed up all kinds of other stuff.
So if support tells you to change the Bios. Don't do it.

Anyways, After reading your posts about the critical update. I decided to install it. To see what would happen. I have all auto updates turned off. Since this thing is working like a champ. I do not install any updates without doing research on it 1st. I learned now to always make a restore point before I ever install any updates or new software. So I was not worried about breaking things.

Well I did the critical security update. I hate to say this. But all my buttons still work fine, "Knock on wood" hee hee. Including the remote.
Oh!, Before I forget. The last HDX, the one I'm on now. Did not come with norton Installed. The case manager and I had a long discussion about Norton. Since I already had a subscibtion to Tren Micro. We decioded to put that on this HDX. Could be why Everything is working much better on this one then the last one. The first 3 machines all had Norton installed.

Just remeber. It took HP 4 tries with me to get it right.

As I was reminded the other day. That was about $20,000 plus shipping and build time, they spent on one customer to get it right. Which I still think was rather strange. That's why I keep thinking that, HP had some other reason to do this with me then to just have a happy customer.

Sorry I can't be of any more help with the buttons.
But as you know. I have been though this. Name the problem. I most likely have had it.

Just for the heck of it. With the remote. Take a clean lint free cloth. Or the cloth that came with the HDX and wipe down the remote. If you did not remove the clear plastic strip on top of the remote when it was taken out of the box. Peel that off.
Hold the remote directly in front of the IR sensor in front of the keyboard and press the movie mode button. See if that works.

    Good luck.

I reinstalled the quicklaunch button drivers completely and did NOT install the critical update.

That update, BlackKnight, WILL disable some or all of the buttons. I read that somewhere at hp's site. I also read that 'swap the battery out, do this, do that, hold down the button, yada trick' will get it to work after that crit update. I tried it and said phuck it. Too much pain in the lifting that big old thing to do that. Have a great day.

    Aloha

Oh yeah, Black, if you do what i posted above and they still don't work pm me. I'll tell you exactly where i got the files and stuff. (i'm at home and my hdx is at work- i'll be at the station tomorrow)
